My friend Amy introduced me to Khao Sarn, an authentic Northern Thai restaurant located on Harvard Street, conveniently located in Coolidge Corner.

Khao Sarn is a great place for lunch, it is kid friendly, strollers definitely can work here. The service is quick and efficient for those of you who have an hour for lunch and the food is delicious.

We love the shumai appetizer, the delicate dumplings are made with pork and shrimp. The satay was tasty, the beef was char grilled. The sweet beef was also another favorite at our table, Thai style soft jerky marinated with coriander seeds, soy and seasonings served with a side of sticky rice.

There is a soup for everyone’s taste, from chicken dumpling soup to the famous Tom Yum Goong – spicy with shrimp, mushrooms, lemongrass, chili paste, fresh lime juice and cilantro.

I loved the sweet and sour chicken ($13.95), but if you like the spicier things, they have some of those dishes too, like mango curry chicken, chicken gaprow and tamarind chicken.

If you like to go classic, pad thai, Khao Sarn has you covered, with the traditional, crispy chicken – the traditional pad thai with crispy chicken on top, and the mee rob pad thai with stir fried crispy egg noodles, chicken, ground peanuts, eggs, bean sprouts and chicken.

IMG_2735There are a few tables here, but it is certainly tight, most people are getting takeout.

IMG_2737I have the crispy chicken ($8.95), marinated chicken deep-fried until crispy brown with pineapple chunks, tomato, red & green peppers in Thai sweet and sour sauce. A little heavy on the sweet and sour sauce but a good dish over all.

The spring rolls ($5.95), crispy Thai-style vegetarian rolls, served with a delicious sweet and sour sauce, were a little underwhelming. I wished that they were more flavorful. Overall the food was ok, not very authentic tasting, but that may be because of the choices that we made.

IMG_2569So my two coworkers and I are standing in line waiting to order lunch. We order and someone calls out, “Next”. The guy behind us looks at us, as if to say, “is that you?”, to which I say that we are all set. He then says, “oh, I wasn’t ready…I’m not sure what to order…you’ve been here before, what’s good here?” Apparently being Asian means that I am a regular at every Asian takeout joint in town…despite what he thought, this is our (and my) first time here. They have a well rounded menu, something to appeal to any palette. I had the sweet and sour chicken – they have lunch specials available Until 4:00pm. It is served with your choice of a side. Entree choices – lunch: chicken, pork, vegetable, tofu, shrimp $1, squid $1, scallop $1, beef $1, crispy chicken$1, seafood $2, or duck $2. Side choices: steamed white rice, steamed brown rice$1, or steamed noodles $1.

We also pick up two orders of dumplings, one vegetarian and one with chicken. While the chicken dumplings have a tightly packed flavorful filling inside, it is the loosely stuffed vegetable dumplings that (surprisingly to me) steal the show.

The line, like any place at noon around here, is fairly long, but it moves quickly. There are tables to eat your lunch here (there isn’t much ambiance), but most people are doing takeout. See their menu here.
