Apparently my mother and I had the same idea, we had both been wanting to try out RFK Kitchen in Needham. So when her birthday came around this year, obviously we decided to try it out. Make sure to make a reservation, because this place gets packed!

There’s an open dining room, and if you are lucky enough to grab a seat at the counter you can watch the cooks in the open kitchen preparing your meal. Rachel Klein opened RFK Kitchen in her home town, and brought on fellow Liquid Art House alum (and Top Chef contestant) Stacey Cogswell as Executive Chef.

They had some good menu options for the kids at the table, we went with the mac and cheese. Generous portion, we brought 1/2 home for lunch the next day!

To start, the buffalo fiddleheads – a little bit of a spicy kick to them – the cheese was a welcome addition to the plate, but my mouth still tingled!

We had a a delicious meal, everyone enjoyed what they ordered. The strip loin steak comes with spring onions, parsnips and malt vinegar aioli.

The short rib was so tender and was served with spelt and soffits.

This was no ordinary chicken dish, the rotisserie chicken, served with potatoes, onions and lemon was so flavorful. Other entree options include a golden cioppino, a roasted monkfish, the RFK burger and a garbanzo bean stew – to name a few.

The Atlantic Cod was beautifully plated with asparagus, forbidden rice and ribbons of rhubarb.

They kindly added a birthday message to my mom’s dessert.

No longer on the menu, the macaron with rhubarb curd and vanilla bean cream was tasty, albeit a little difficult to eat. I love the ribbons of rhubarb!

Service was good. Street parking at meters and in a lot close by.

When you babysit little kids, it’s hard to find things to do if it’s raining out. I had blogged before about Treat cupcakes and they graciously sent me a coupon for 2 free make your own cupcakes. We decided that today would be the perfect day! We arrived at around 10am. We were the only ones in there for a while, but hey, it’s never too early for cupcakes!

They were busy icing cupcakes when we arrived-above are the pre-made options.

The cupcake bar! You pick your cake: vanilla, chocolate, marble or gluten free. You pick your frosting: classtic butter cream, chocolate butter cream, cream cheese, gluten and dairy free butter cream or a seasonal flavor. You can pick up to three candy toppings and have the option to mix them into the frosting or get it on the side for you to decorate yourself. We went with one chocolate and one vanilla cupcake, both with vanilla frosting and for toppings we went with m&m’s, rainbow sprinkles, gummy frogs and blox candy.

And this is our creation! What a really fun way to spend the morning! Thanks Treat!!

I’m not a huge fan of thin crust pizza in general, but I do love Stone Hearth Pizza. Their pizzas have great flavor, they use the freshest ingredients, and they try to use local ingredients whenever they can.

The dine in service can, at times, be slow. So I ordered take out for lunch the other day. I got the “Homemade Sausage & Caramelized Onion – Made with our sauce, cheese, and charred red/yellow peppers.” ($7.95) I got a junior 8″ size, which is about the size of a salad plate.  The sausage was good with just the right amount of spice and it was nicely balanced by the sweetness from the caramelized onions and the peppers. A really nice blend of flavors.

Other great things  about this place: you can choose what kind of crust you want-regular or whole wheat, and they have tons of gluten free options! Other flavors I love here are the four cheese pizza with mozzarella, fontina, goat and parmesan and the prosciutto and pineapple. Not in the mood for pizza? Try one of their flat bread sandwiches, I’m partial to the stop, chop and roll (Mixed greens, tomatoes, bacon, chicken, basil, scallions, cucumber, blue cheese and balsamic dressing) or The Californian (Romaine salad, fresh avocado, Bell & Evans chicken, shaved red onion, and Dijon lemon dressing).
