Mark and Bekka were freshly back from their honeymoon and I wanted all the details! They brought their new pup and we grabbed a communal picnic table out back. Seats are also pretty hard to come by during peak season, so try going at an off time or take your chances hovering over people eating and pounce on their seats the moment they get up, because if you hesitate, you’ll get the seat scooped out from under you! Of course the fried clams, with bellies of course, because anything else would be uncivilized – the fried pickles, and I had the fried shrimp plate!

There is just something about fried clams and summer! My mom always says she only has fried clams once a year, but at the end of the season, it’s been 4 times already!

Where’s your favorite fried clam spot?

We got ours to go, and picked up a few fried clam plates (of course bellies – strips would just be uncivilized). Market price out dinner at a  little over $20 per platter, but it comes with creamy coleslaw and your choice of fries, a baked potato, rice pilaf or beans. This just hit the spot – the batter was light and crispy, a perfect meal down at the Cape.

In addition to clams, Seafood Sam’s offers shrimp, Haddock, Cod, oysters, lobster and other non seafood options. You can get fried platters or baked, broiled or steamed platters – they have a ton of options!

On a whim we decided to head up to Kittery, Maine to do some outlet shopping and get some fried clams. I had recently seen that Bob’s had been voted as ‘Best New England Clam Shack’ by Boston Magazine.

We have driven by this place many times when we have been in Kittery, the place is always crowded. In the summer they have people directing traffic in the parking lots because it is so chaotic.

Order at the window and garb a picnic table outside, but note that they are communal tables, so if you’re only two, you might end up sitting with strangers. You pick up your order at the window, but there is staff around to help clear away your mess when you’re done.

People say that if you are a true New Englander, you don’t ask if fried clams have bellies….because of course they do. The clams were good, lightly battered and fried. The french fries were crisp and crunchy.

We also picked up a lobster roll, which for me, just had too much mayo on it. It was on the small side as well-but then again, I guess they weren’t voted best lobster roll….so next time, we will just stick to the clams. The atmosphere is very casual, people are quite friendly while waiting for your food. The service was fast and efficient-a nice way to spend a summer afternoon…

It is going to be my summer time project this year to try as many clam shacks as possible. We started off the season in April at the Clam Box, before it got super busy. Located in Ipswich, MA this place is what seems like miles from the main highway. Parking was tough outside, and that’s with it not even being crowded. I can only imagine what it is like when the season is in full swing!

There is a small area to order and then pick up your take out. The line moved fairly quickly. There were all kinds of options, plates that come with two sides, mini meals that come with one side and then boxes with no sides. The plates run about $13-$25 depending on what you choose-clams, clam strips, scallops, oysters and haddock are just some of the options available. Don’t feel like seafood? The offer burgers, hot dogs and chicken fingers as well.

They have inside seating in the back, as well as a patio in the parking lot if you want to eat outside.

We ordered two mini meals-scallops with french fries and clams with onion rings. There was a lot of food and we couldn’t finish it all-but there were certainly people here who were ready to do some serious eating. The batter was light and not very greasy, they had just changed the oil earlier that day. The fries were crisp and the onion rings were pretty darn good. The clams were whole-no clam strips for this New England gal! They had a nice flavor to them, not too gritty. It was a little cold outside, so we ate in…seems like such a shame though. The decor inside was minimal-nothing to write home about-but then again, aren’t you just there for the food? All in all, not a bad way to kick off the season. I got a few other suggestions of where to try next, so stay tuned!
