Fall may be my favorite time down on Cape Cod. The crowds are gone, you can get down Main Street in a reasonable amount of time, and you can get into the restaurants again. We recently went to Simply Divine Pizza in Falmouth. The kids loved watching the chefs make the pizza, spinning the dough high up into the air. The pizzas are Neapolitan style and cooked in a stone fired oven. They only use all natural ingredients and locally sourced produce.

Pizzas come in mouth watering combinations like fig and prosciutto, chicken pesto, shrimp scampi, white three cheese, cheeseburger, meat lover, Greek and scallop bacon to name a few. You can make your own pizza with toppings like house made maple fennel sausage, meatballs, apple wood smoked bacon, black olives, fresh pineapple, kalamata olives, sweet potato, and anchovies. Pizza not your thing (seriously?), they have other options such as pasta, sandwiches and paninis.

Kid’s menu options include a ham and cheese panini, grilled cheese, hot dog, kids pasta and meatballs, mac and cheese or a slice of pizza all for $8.95. They come with a free soft drink and a Hoodsie cup.

They deliver within a 5 mile range with a $10 minimum purchase plus a $2.50 delivery charge. Parking is available on Main Street or in lots close by. They have a good size space and can accommodate large parties.

Where is your go – to place for pizza on the Cape?

Jay was over the house one day and we were talking about lobster rolls and where the best ones were down at the Cape. I was telling him about the Barking Claw and he told me about Quahog Republic.

IMG_2826

The restaurant is a dive bar with large LCD televisions on the wall and keno at the bar.

IMG_2827

I started with the quahog chowder ($4.50) that won the Cape Cod Life Upper Cape gold medal. The chowder came with apple wood smoked bacon, red bliss potatoes and a little cream. It was flavorful and hit the spot.

IMG_2828

The “monsta lobsta roll” ($26) is seasonal and comes with tail and claw meat with a little bit of mayo. You can get some hot butter on the side as well. The sandwich was enormous and came with heaps of lobster meat.

IMG_2829

The potato skins ($12) came loaded with cheddar and mozzarella cheese and were served with a side of salsa and sour cream.

IMG_2830

The burger with bacon and a fried egg, because all burgers should have a fried egg on top! While this was a delicious burger, the sheer height of it made it hard to eat.

IMG_2831

While chili technically isn’t on the menu (you can get your potato skins topped with it) we got a bowl of it. Pretty tasty, it seriously hit the spot.

I had been eagerly awaiting the opening of Bear in Boots Gastropub on Main Street in Falmouth last year. In the summer it was insanely crowded – now that it is off season, we headed down to have dinner. Even though it was cold and rainy, the place was packed tonight!

The restaurant is owned by Kate and Gates Rickard and the food is inspired by their travels abroad. The name Bear in Boots comes from the nicknames of their sons, and anywhere you see a squirrel in the restaurant, that is for their youngest daughter.

The restaurant is charming. The piano above is used on the weekends when there is live music. The tables are made from sinker oak that was previously submerged – if you look closely you can see some faint blue streaks.

The restaurant is family friendly, while also being a great place to grab a drink with friends. They are a 97% scratch kitchen, from their bread to their ice cream to their mustard and condiments. They age all of their meat on site and even their syrups at the bar are house made.

Bear in Boots 2

We sat at a high top table right next to the open kitchen. We were able to talk to Chef Joe Ellia throughout the meal and see the team preparing our food. We sampled a little bit of everything, some of the plates were our choices and some were the chef’s. We started with the Autumn salad ($9) was seasonal baby spinach topped with roasted pumpkin, figs, toasted almonds and goat cheese topped with a light bacon infused oil.

Bear in Boots 3

The gnocchi ($9) were pillow like potato dumplings toasted with pistachios in a brown butter sauce with roasted squash. I loved this dish, such a comfort food of mine. It just felt like fall on a plate.

Bear in Boots 5

The table pretzel ($7) is a plate sized knotted pretzel to share with stone ground mustard. All their bread is made in house and the pretzel was so light and delicious.

Bear in Boots 8

The Log Island meatballs ($8) are two meatballs made with house ground beef, pork, veal, Pecorino Roman cheese and garden fresh herbs in a marinara sauce and served with a garlic knot.

Bear in Boots 7

The grilled Caesar salad ($8) was a grilled 1/2 heart of Romaine with Caesar dressing, Parmesan cheese and croutons. I love this new take on a Caesar! The smoke from the grill added on another nice layer of flavor.

Bear in Boots 11

The pierogies were a special for the evening.  I love carbs on carbs and these did not disappoint – the house made dumplings were filled with potatoes.

Bear in Boots 6

The poutine ($12) was house cut fries smothered with duck confit, cheddar cheese curds, chicken gravy finished with melted cheddar cheese. The magic words, the chef had me with duck confit and cheese curds. Before, it was hard to find poutine anywhere, glad to see that it is becoming more popular.

Bear in Boots 4

The chef’s special for dinner was a brisket sandwich on top of a jalapeno cheddar biscuit and topped with house made pickles. Let me tell you that the biscuit was AMAZING. I’m still dreaming about it! The brisket had a nice smokey flavor to it and was so tender.

Bear in Boots 9The cassoulet ($21) is a classic French stew made with lamb, duck confit, house cured bacon and white beans braised in housemade vegetable stock, topped with a grilled housemade pork sausage, breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese.

Bear in Boots 12

The ricotta cheese ravioli ($25) was paired with duck confit and wild mushrooms in a toasted pine nut and brown butter sauce and topped with a 90 minute egg. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about berries with this savory dish, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well they complimented the dish.

Bear in Boots 10

Dessert was a delicious trio of cranberry donuts with a blood orange sauce and candied orange peel, a pumpkin cheesecake with a nutty crust and a traditional creme brûlée. All in all, an amazing meal. I look forward to heading there again soon and trying out the other dishes on the menu – the fried chicken and the sunny side burger are calling my name!

Disclaimer: I was invited to be a guest at Bear in Boots Gastropub. My meal was provided complimentary. All opinions are my own.

IMG_0832

The menu has a little bit of everything from clam chowder to burritos to pizza and subs. The meatball sub was tasty, but the roll petered out about halfway through and I ended up eating it with a fork.

IMG_0828

You can’t find hard tacos at a lot of places, so we were excited that they had them here – $3.99 or two for $6.99.

IMG_0829

The burger was pretty tasty, it was 6oz of ground beef topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and mustard.

Maison Villatte is one of those places where you walk into it thinking you’re going to get a croissant and walk out with a dozen things and you don’t know how you just spent $75.

IMG_0567

Everything just looks so darn delicious and don’t even get me started on the smell! The small cafe seats about 20 and the line cane be out the door and down the street during peak season. You drool as you stand in line waiting to order, ogling at all the fine pastries. The croissants come in a variety of flavors, from plain to almond to chocolate. You can’t go wrong.

IMG_0817

In addition to sweet items, the carry savory ones as well, like this delicious mushroom quiche.

IMG_0814

The pastries are like works of art like this blueberry and raspberry tart. It was so buttery and delicious!

IMG_0815

I loved the colors of this tart, apricot and pistachio make a good flavor combination.

IMG_0816

And for those that like something a little more classic, the brioche is always a good choice!

I have seen The Barking Claw’s cart for some time outside in Grumpy’s Pub’s parking lot.

IMG_8208

To be honest, my first thought was: lobster from a cart? How good could that be? How fresh is it? Did it come from a plastic tub? But then I thought, if the lobster rolls weren’t delicious, I wouldn’t see the cart there year after year. So this was the year that I was going to try one. We stopped over on a Sunday afternoon (they are only open Wed-Sun, 11-3) to give one a try.

IMG_8203

The lobster rolls are well priced at $16. You can also get hot dogs or a stuffed quahog.IMG_8204

Owner Bill Swain loads the lobster rolls up with a good deal of lobster meat. There’s no mayo here (thank goodness), just lobster and some butter with a little bit of lettuce on a toasted hot dog bun.
IMG_8216

I have to say that I was a fool not to have stopped earlier, these lobster rolls rank right up at the top of my list. The lobster is fresh and sweet. The presentation is simple, letting the lobster speak for itself.

Anejo opened in Falmouth on Main Street in 2010 and it’s been packed ever since. The restaurant offers Mexican cuisine and has a great outdoor patio – perfect for people watching during the summer afternoons (they have heat lamps for those nights when it can get a little cool).

IMG_8168

We had a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon and we were lucky enough to be able to get a seat outside on the patio. Of course we had to try the table side guacamole ($12) which can be customized – we asked them to hold the cilantro!

IMG_8170

The Tinga Tacos ($11): 3 grilled chile-marinated chicken tacos served open-faced on soft local corn tortillas with jack cheese, sauce negra, pico de gallo, sour cream, cotija cheese and lime.

IMG_8173

Lobster mac and cheese ($14): fusile pasta, fresh lobster, chorizo, chipotle stung queso sauce, jalapeño panko crust and cotija crumble.

The menu offers a little something for everyone, from nachos and quesadillas to mojo mussels and corn dusted calamari you are sure to find something you will like (and if you’re like me you can’t decide they all sound good). Their drink menu consists of a nice variety of tequila and mezcal – make sure to try the prickly pear sangria blanco!
