I saw some posts about how The Dapper Doughnut that was opening in the Natick Collection. Such a cute idea and nice to have something new in suburbia! I had to figure out where they were, and it turns out they are in the food court upstairs in the mall near Sears – as far as I am concerned it feels like no mans land in the mall (sorry!). I kind of even forgot that the food court existed in there…although with all the restaurants going out recently (Au Bon Pain, Paul, NM Cafe), I have to admit, we did eat there one day….

The concept is fun. Pick your quantity (6/9/12+), pick your toppings, pick your sauce. We tried the cinnamon sugar, strawberry Nutella, chocolate peanut butter, chocolate sprinkles and strawberry bella. The mini doughnuts are made fresh while you wait – the kids thought that was pretty fun. They top them as you wait. The flavor combinations were good, but they just didn’t translate to the doughnuts very well – and frankly, when they cooled down they fell a little flat. So if you do decide to stop and get some – I’d recommend eating them while they are hot. Like them on Facebook and let them know when you order for 15% off your order.

On our last day in Charleston we ran around King Street hitting up all the good places. First stop of the morning was Glazed, a gourmet doughnut shop. The shop is the brain child of Allison Smith who makes the doughnuts in house as well as all the glazes and the fillings.

The menu changes daily, so be sure to follow them on Facebook to see what they have available. And when they sell out, that’s it.

The shop had a line out the door but it went quickly. Dougnuts are priced from $2-$3 a piece. It was hard to choose, they were so many delicious options the day we went.

IMG_4421

The flavors of the day were: glazed, maple bacon, raspberry, lemon old fashioned, chocolate with sprinkles, cookie monster, cinnamon sugar, honey bun, black and white, kulfi (cardamom pistachio filling with a mango glaze), the purple goat and an apple bacon fritter.

IMG_4419

There are plenty of seats so if you can’t wait until you get home to gobble up one of these goodies, grab a coffee with your doughnut and wolf one down while you’re there. We were going out for breakfast, so we brought these babies back to Boston with us! I’m as surprised as you that they made it all the way back – it was sheer will power…

IMG_4441

The lemon old fashioned was light and bright.

IMG_4442

The glazed was simple and had just the right amount of sweetness.

IMG_4443

The raspberry was my favorite. The doughnut was light and fluffy and the glaze was sweet and fruity – it just reminded me of summer.

IMG_4445

The cookies and cream was so decadent – I loved the chocolate doughnut.

They had such delicious flavor combinations, I definitely want to go back in hopes that they have the coffee cake, the sweet corn and blueberry, the key lime pie or the tiramisu!

I’m dying to know where your go to doughnut spot is! Leave a comment below!

At the beginning of the year, Whisk took over Fazenda Coffee Roasters in JP. It’s conveniently located across the street from the Forest Hills train station.

Whisk is run by chefs Jeremy Kean and Philip Kruta. The duo were the first to take over Wink and Nod, before Bread and Salt and Akinto. I originally met Jeremy at the Roosters event where he provided delicious snacks. The team currently puts out delicious donuts in the morning and tasty offerings for lunch. They are working on an evening option, and until they figure things out, they are hosting supper club pop ups. While Kean and Kruta hold down the back of the house, Kean’s sister Rebecca has taken on the front of the house as the restaurant’s GM.

Tonight we were attending a WHISK-y, ramen and blues event.

The watermelon salad was a must – with summer coming to a close, I want to eat all the watermelon I can! This was a hyper local salad, with everything in it coming from farms not more than 40 miles away. It’s topped with Thatcher ricotta, blue basil, husk tomatoes, and flowers. This dish is what summer should taste like.

Whisk 5

Ben’s Wild Ramen mixed things up with tomato broth as the base, wild sorel, wild mushrooms and sunflower paste.

Whisk 6

We also had the 20 day NY burger with lion’s mane gravy, preserved ramp and kimchee served with a side of french fries.

Whisk 7

While I’m not really an oyster kind of gal, these Island Creek oysters with cucumber, raspberyy and wild onion not only looked amazing but were quite tasty!

Whisk 8

For dessert we had a mint chocolate chip donut – I was prepared not to like it as I’m not a mint kind of gal, but it was surprisingly delicious! I loved the chocolate crumbles on top and the mint was subtle.

Whisk 9

My favorite of the night was a peach donut with sesame seeds and a roasted peach on top. Not only is this an amazing presentation, but the flavor was top notch.

Whisk 12

The restaurant has a lot of seating and they continue to brew Fazenda coffee during the daytime.

Whisk 10

The band for the evening was a little more bluegrass than jazz, but they had a great set while we were eating.

Whisk 11

So of course, it’s a small world, and the drummer/trumpet player was Mike Greenstein, and we went to high school together. Take a listen below!
