Poké seems to be all the rage these days. We stopped by Pokéworks in Somerville to try out some special fruit bowls. They’re only available today, Friday, 9/29 until Sunday 10/1 and next weekend 10/6 until 10/8. While the poké bowls you see here are served in fun fruit bowls, if you order one, they won’t come that way (can you imagine all the carved out fruit shells?!?!) If you mention the code “special10” you can get 10% off one of these bowls!

Pictured above is the Watermelon Shiso: Atlantic salmon, watermelon, crab salad, masago, green onion, sweet onion, edamame, cucumber, sesame seeds, fresh shiso, and ponzu fresh sauce. I was surprised at how fresh the watermelon was, and sweet too! I loved the sweet and salty together and the edamames were a nice addition to the bowl (added a little heft to the dish). Really nice textures and flavors going on in this bowl, it was my favorite of the two, even though I’m not a huge salmon fan.

Next up was the Pineapple Bora: Bora, pineapple, cilantro, fresh ginger, red chili, and lotus chips. To be honest, I had no idea what Bora was before I tried this dish, turns out they are also known as mullet fish. The fish is versatile and a little on the chewy side. I loved the pineapple in this dish for the sweetness and the kick from the red chili. Leah had joked that she would have liked this dish a little more spicy and then on her second bite got a mouthful of chili 😉 .

So what else can you get at Pokéworks if you can’t make it in for the special bowls? They have a fast casual vibe that you are probably familiar with: pick your base (sushi rice, brown rice of quinoa), pick your protein (ahi tuna, shrimp, scallops, chicken, tofu, or salmon), and pick your sauce. Add toppings like cucumber, Hijiki seaweed, shiso leaves, crab salad, wonton crisps, or toasted rice puffs.

Seating is at communal tables and at a high bar in front of a glass garage door in the front. It was the perfect afternoon to have the door up! Even though many people were grabbing their food to go, but the tables filled up quickly.

Street parking is available at meters and there are pay lots nearby.

Fall may be my favorite time down on Cape Cod. The crowds are gone, you can get down Main Street in a reasonable amount of time, and you can get into the restaurants again. We recently went to Simply Divine Pizza in Falmouth. The kids loved watching the chefs make the pizza, spinning the dough high up into the air. The pizzas are Neapolitan style and cooked in a stone fired oven. They only use all natural ingredients and locally sourced produce.

Pizzas come in mouth watering combinations like fig and prosciutto, chicken pesto, shrimp scampi, white three cheese, cheeseburger, meat lover, Greek and scallop bacon to name a few. You can make your own pizza with toppings like house made maple fennel sausage, meatballs, apple wood smoked bacon, black olives, fresh pineapple, kalamata olives, sweet potato, and anchovies. Pizza not your thing (seriously?), they have other options such as pasta, sandwiches and paninis.

Kid’s menu options include a ham and cheese panini, grilled cheese, hot dog, kids pasta and meatballs, mac and cheese or a slice of pizza all for $8.95. They come with a free soft drink and a Hoodsie cup.

They deliver within a 5 mile range with a $10 minimum purchase plus a $2.50 delivery charge. Parking is available on Main Street or in lots close by. They have a good size space and can accommodate large parties.

Where is your go – to place for pizza on the Cape?

We were fresh home from the hospital and the last thing I wanted to do was cook. I couldn’t stomach another Lean Cuisine meal, as I had eaten those for the last 2 months straight. That’s where The Foodery came into our dinner plans. The Foodery isn’t a meal prep kit like Blue Apron, all the food comes fully cooked – all you need to do is heat and serve. They give you two options, microwave or conventional oven – so anyone can heat these up – even my parents (who still don’t have a microwave!).

IMG_3856

So how does The Foodery work? Each week there is a different menu, with 6 choices. You pick your meal and then pick if you want 2 or 4 servings. Place your order by 10am on Thursday and have it delivered on Sunday between 5pm and 8pm in the Greater Boston area. There’s no commitment, just a $50 minimum. When I think about it, I spent more than that on takeout weekly – and the food wasn’t nearly as healthy. The Foodery sources certain produce from organic and local sources to avoid exposure to pesticides and genetically modified foods. All proteins are raised without antibiotics or hormones and sourced locally when possible.

So what did I choose? Things that I would never cook myself – first up, apple glazed pork ribs with apple sauce and a three bean salad. Heated this up at 400 degrees for 10 or so minutes in the toasted oven and bam – this is what our dinner looked like. If my husband didn’t know me better, I would have tried to pass this off like I made it myself! So how did it taste? Delicious! First, the ribs (antibiotic and hormone free) – the meat was so tender, it literally fell off the bone. The apple glaze on the ribs was subtle – which I really liked because you could really taste the flavor of the meat. The apple sauce was SO good – very adult, not sugary sweet like I remember having as a kid, it had a warm spice to it. My husband loved the three bean salad, made with garbanzo beans, green beans and kidney beans.

IMG_4116

For our second meal we tried the chicken tikka masala (4 portion). This wasn’t the traditional tikka masala that I was used to – it had brown rice, yogurt, garlic, ginger, pepper, paprika, fenugreek, peas, carrots, cilantro and cauliflower among other ingredients.

IMG_4120

Pop this in the oven for 3 minutes or so and dinner is ready. Now it had brown rice in it, but I love my chicken tikka masala with white rice, so I added some of my own. I am loving the Jasmine rice from Trader Joes, just microwave for 3 minutes and it tastes like you cooked it in a rice maker! There were a lot of things going on in this dish. I loved the addition of the cauliflower, but the spice mix in this tikka masala didn’t feel like the one I am familiar with.

I encourage you to try out The Foodery – they offer quick, tasty dinners that you can feel good about eating.

Chloe delivered twice to my office – on the second visit she came with the smoked sea salted caramel (above) and the pumpkin pie (below). *Disclaimer: Scoopsies provided me with two complimentary pints of ice cream. All opinions are my own.

imageThe pumpkin pie is made with hand-baked pumpkin with clove, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, allspice, and a pinch of turmeric. The pumpkin has a wonderful smell – so spicy! I loved that the consistency was smooth and creamy!

scoopsiesMy first delivery from Chloe a few weeks ago was the S’moreo flavor – which is my favorite of the three I tried. There are larges pieces of Oreos mixed in, way more than what you would get if you bought Oreo ice cream at the store.  Prices range from $8-$13 per pint. There is a $20 minimum for all delivery orders and Chloe offers a discount for orders over 8 pints.

IMAG0275Mr Sushi is located on Harvard Street in Coolidge Corner. Even though they are a Japanese restaurant, they have some delicious Korean options. The restaurant is very casual and almost all the menu items are under $20.

IMG_20140509_190854We start with the gyoza ($6) that we have pan fried. The meat and veggie dumplings do not disappoint.

IMAG0268I order the Bi Bim Bab ($11.95), vegetables and beef that has been cooked in sesame oil are added to rice in a hot stone bowl and topped with a fried egg. The best part is when the rice keeps cooking and it gets a little crunchy on the bottom!

IMAG0272We order the spicy tuna maki ($5) and the shrimp tempura maki ($7). Both rolls are fairly straightforward and par for the course.

IMAG0273Bulgogi ($15.95) is one of my favorite Korean dishes – this marinated thinly sliced beef dish falls a little short for me, as I hoped that the meat would have been a bit more flavorful. The service was just ok – while the restaurant wasn’t busy, our server was busy at other tables. The crowd here leans more towards families with small children and regular locals.

IMAG0134Indian music videos play on the tv behind the bar.

IMAG0128We start off with some delicious flatbread crisps that have a nice peppery flavor.

IMAG0130We order the veggie samosas ($3.95) and devour them in an instant. The turnovers are stuffed with potatoes and peas. I could just eat a bunch of these for my meal.

IMAG0135With each dish, they ask how spicy you want it. I’m a lightweight and order my chicken tikka masala with no spice ($12.95). The entrees come with unlimited rice – the chicken is so tender and the tomato cream sauce makes you want to lick the bowl clean.

IMAG0136Of course, no Indian meal would be complete without an order or garlic naan ($3.95). They offer a variety of naan: traditional, aloo – stuffed with potatoes, chicken naan, pershawari – stuffed with raisins, almonds and cashew nuts to name a few.

IMAG0140We also ordered the beef curry ($13.95) which is equally delicious.

Shan-a-punjab  offers free delivery within 2.5 miles and you can place your orders online.
