With our family get togethers, I find that while it might be nice to have a home cooked meal, it’s also nice to be able to spend time with your guests, instead of being banished in the kitchen. It’s hard to think of things that everyone would like, but really, everyone in my family can agree on BBQ.

Really though, I just love the biscuits and honey butter from Sweet Cheeks!

Everyone left with a full belly. Pulled chicken, brisket, pulled pork, a farm salad, Mac and cheese, and some ribs! I’m literally salivating as I’m looking at these pictures!

Are you drooling yet? You can get all of this delivered to your house with Caviar. Now that the Red Sox season is over, head over to Fenway and try some of those biscuits and honey butter if you haven’t already.

Meat Pies. Is there anything else to say?

Maybe a little. KO Pies has been around since 2010, with two locations, one in Southie and one at the shipyard. They serve the most delicious savory meat pies with crust that is out of this world. The perfect consistency, flaky, and light. The pies come in flavors like: classic beef, classic beef with cheese, curried vegetables, Irish beef stew, and braised lamb shank. They’re authentic Australian pies, meant to be eaten with your hands right out of the tin. We tried them all! Let’s just say that we left in a serious food coma! Don’t forget the sausage roll – it’s pretty delicious as well. You can eat in or take out – the seating area is small, but don’t let that deter you, most people are taking out anyway.

Do they have other things besides meat pies? Yup. a chicken schnitzel burger, spicy shrimp on the barbie, Aussie style Caesar salad, a chickpea salad and potato wedges. I picked up this delicious corn chowder while I was there, it might be one of the tastiest chowders I’ve had in a while.

Did you know they also have “brekkie”? (Southie location only) Breakfast menu items include: bacon and egg, egg and avocado, sweet corn fritters, vegemite on toast and a brekkie pie (smokehouse bacon, fingerling potatoes, a hard boiled egg and cheddar cheese). Brekkie is served 7am – 10:30am Monday through Friday.

As with anything in Southie, parking can be tricky. It’s on street if you can find some and there is a pay garage close by.

It’s been a while since I’ve written about Cafe de Boston. I wanted to revisit them since I am doing posts this week about double duty restaurants (where you can eat in or do catering). See my previous posts about Cafe de Boston here and here. I headed in for lunch with a group of fellow bloggers and we all gathered upstairs in the private meeting room to enjoy our lunch. In addition to Cafe de Boston offering catering delivered to your office, you can bring your meeting into Cafe de Boston (the room holds 14 people). They have a great room (conference call capability, wifi and multimedia hookups to a LCD tv) where they can bring up platters of food or you can have your colleagues go downstairs, pick out what they want and bring it back upstairs for your meeting.

IMG_0503

If you plan on dining in, I love this new feature that they have – you can charge your cell phone in this cool display and you don’t have to worry about it being taken because you take the key with you!

The macarons were delicious – you should check out their dessert case, I want one of everything! The baklava below was so delicate and just the right hint of sweetness.

IMG_0510

So why order your office catering through Cafe de Boston? They give the person placing the order a FREE MEAL! That’s right admins, take note! And if that’s not enough, they have a catering loyalty program as well:

You might miss Bottega di Capri if you didn’t know where to look. This unassuming little restaurant is one of Brookline’s best kept secrets. They have delicious Italian food and more types of pasta dishes than you’ll know what to do with. You could come here for a month straight, order something new every time, and would still have options left on the menu for you to try. This most recent time we tried the meatball sandwich. The meatballs were delicious and well seasoned, but it was the bread here that put the sandwich over the top- soft, fresh and well seasoned. There was the perfect bread to filling to sauce ratio here.

IMG_1804

Here is a list of just some of the sauces they offer:

  • Pomodoro: Basil tomato sauce
  • Arrabbiata: Spicy tomato sauce w/white wine sauce
  • Amatriciana: Pancetta in a spicy tomato sauce
  • Puttanesca: Olives, anchovies, capers. hot peppers, tomato
  • Pesto Rosa: Tomato-cream pesta sauce with parmesan cheese
  • Rosantina: Tomato cream sauce
  • Riviera Sauce Tomato-pesta sauce
  • Carbonara: Pancelta in a cream sauce
  • Alfredo: Alfredo cream-butter sauce with parmesan cheese
  • Pesto: Our own fresh pesta w/pine nuts, basil, cheese, garlic and olive oil
  • Pesto: Creamy Alfredo-pesta sauce
  • Vongole: Red or white sea clams sauce
  • Parma: Sausages porcini mushrooms, white wine
  • Bolognese: Tomato meat sauce
  • Boscaiola: Ham, caramelized onions, sweet peas, sun-dried tomato puree, cream, parmesan cheese

What is your favorite type of sauce?

imag1904I had been to Cafe de Boston last year (see my previous review here) but barely recognized it when I went back last week. I honestly thought this was a different location. In my holiday induced (overwhelmed) haze, I had come in a different entrance and the place looked so much bigger and brighter. Cafe de Boston has taken over the space next door and made it a great seating area. Every seat at the bar has an outlet under the counter so that you can recharge while you eat lunch. In the main room there’s a great signpost directing you to your lunch of choice.

imag1902Some recent new additions to the space include an amazing Mediterranean yogurt bar where you can design your own Greek yogurt parfait. Add fruit, cereal, even hot sauce if that strikes your fancy.

imag1900The thing that really caught my eye was the create your own smoothie. Choose your frozen yogurt, choose your fruit and/or veggies, and choose your juice – bring it to the cashier and they blend you up your custom smoothie. $7.95 gets you 24oz.

image (3)What else can you find at Cafe de Boston? Pizza (over 10 choices), a pasta station, a crepe station, kebabs, a salad bar and a hot food bar. If you come in after 2:30, anything left at the hot bar is discounted. And did you know that in the morning they have a breakfast bar? Not only can you get a breakfast sandwich and your first (or second) cup of coffee, but you can also grab some scrambled eggs and bacon from the buffet.

imag1901Their dessert case has over a dozen choices, and if you like the cakes, you can buy them by the slice or pick up a whole cake for that office birthday. Owner Levent Berksan has done a great job with the space, there really is something for everything.

image (2)Here’s another thing you might not know about Cafe de Boston: they have a conference room available upstairs. You can order lunch ahead of time or have people pick out their lunch when they get there. The room is available for an hour to up to the whole day. Feel like just having them cater to your office? Give Joseph a call and he will take good care of you!

They  have a bunch of salads to choose from on the menu, but I choose to make my own. I think this is where I always get myself into trouble, as I always love the pricey add ons. This salad has iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, hard boiled egg and avocado. While sweetgreen is my “salad bar” restaurant of choice, Tossed is still a good second option.

Some of you may have seen the post on Rita’s catering. If not, you can see it here: http://dgrubs.wordpress.com/tag/catering/ Through them, I was invited to Taste of Seamless, an event on March 6th at the State Room.

IMG_7173

Traffic was a nightmare! Getting from Back Bay to 60 State took about 25 minutes, and was a $45 Uber ride! Meanwhile we couldn’t even get the door to the cab open when we arrived because the wind was blowing so hard! We checked our coats and were ready to go!

IMG_7168

The iconic view from the State Room.

IMG_7167

The event was pretty crowded. The bar was located all the way in the back, which was a little inconvenient, but that was our first stop. After we had a glass of wine in hand, we were ready to brave the crowd.

IMG_7166

The event had a mixed crowd. My friend and I were dressed to the nines since we were heading out to the Restoration Hardware opening afterwards. There were people in jeans and then people in business attire.

IMG_7165

It was hard to tell who was in line waiting to sample food and who was just loitering and eating. We wished that there were more tables downstairs to put down our plates and eat. Let me tell you how hard it is to stand with your purse, your business cards, a glass of wine and a plate of food. You need a third hand to actually eat the food on your plate!

IMG_7164

There was a nice variety of companies at the event. Boston Cafe and Catering, Crazy Dough’s Pizza, El Pelon, Jules Catering, Milk Street Cafe, Moksa, Otto Pizza, Rebecca’s Cafe, Rita’s Catering, Sebastians and Tossed. Some standouts for us were: Boston Catering’s stuffed brie torta on a toasted brioche, El Pelon’s quesadilla, Milk Street’s chicken spring rolls, and Rita’s golden coconut shrimp with cashew curry drizzle. I didn’t have any at the event, but I do love Otto’s mashed potato bacon and scallion pizza as well as their sausage and vidalia pizza.

IMG_7171

Everyone had menus but we decided to just drop our cards instead, one less thing to carry…

IMG_7172

I am always a fan of places that send you home with a snack – it gives you something to remember them by, it made those companies stand out.

IMG_7179

Cake on a stick from Jules Bakery.

IMG_7180

Dense cake on the inside with a hard chocolate shell on the outside. Wasn’t the most moist cake I’ve had, but I remembered them and had their business card.

IMG_7175

And these little whoopie pies from Rita’s were super cute. Not sure that I loved the strawberry filling (they do have great desserts) but I thought that they were adorable. We headed out to brave mother nature and go to the RH opening at the old Louis Boston, we ended up standing in line for about 10 minutes, and then the fire department came and shut the party down….so we never made it inside. From what I hear from a friend of mine who did get in, the place was packed and no one could get to the bar on the second floor. So maybe it was a good thing that we didn’t get in. Meanwhile, it was a fun night, if you want more information about what Seamless has to offer, go to their website at www.seamless.com

IMG_6378I was contacted at my office one day to see if we were interested in a new (not new, but new to us) catering company. They brought us over some of their delicious food to try. We were really impressed by the quality and the freshness of the food. We deal with a lot of “healthy living” clients, so Rita’s was very appealing. They also have vegetarian options as well. The desserts were delicious-they also have a recycling program where if you recycle 25 of their containers, they bring you a free tray of desserts on your next order. Some of our favorites were the bowtie pesto salad-which had a little too much garlic for our office, but it was really tasty. The chicken salad on the left with pears was really good and still very crunchy by the time we got to it. The chicken salad and the tomato and mozzarella salad were really bright in both flavor and presentation. They make this salad with goat cheese, strawberries and nuts which was a real crowd pleaser.

IMG_6367

They are located in Everett and they have been around for some time. They are always in the city delivering, so if you or your office is in Boston, don’t worry!

IMG_6369

I am always a little wary of fish dishes from catering companies, but was told by people who tried the salmon dish that it was delicious-light and fresh.

IMG_6374

This was one of my favorite salads, a Chinese noodle salad that had good flavor and nice bright coloring.IMG_6373

The shrimp salad went pretty quickly, the shrimp was firm and it tasted fresh! They have a wide range of food options, from a casual lunch box to a full service catered event. Call Suzanne, she was our rep, and she was really great. She is personable and her customer service is excellent.
