Located at the pier, just under the Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory is in a prime location. The day was humid and frankly hot as hell. Of course after walking around at the Brooklyn Flea we were sweating and needed something cool, so we waited in the enormous line to get an ice cream.

IMG_2280

The line went out the door and around the building. There are a few seats inside but most people tried to catch the shade of the building at the benches outside. Don’t forget your cash kids, this place is cash only!

IMG_2282

There are rest rooms located in the back, and if you try to get to them before you have ordered, prepare for lots of dirty looks from the people waiting in line!

IMG_2391

While their ice cream looked delicious, we went with the old fashioned ice cream soda, vanilla ice cream with coke. Although, while waiting to pay, the guy behind me ordered strawberry ice cream and sprite, which seems like sacriledge but I’m oddly intrigued. Next time!!

How do you order your ice cream soda?

Whenever I am in New York I loved to go to the Brooklyn Flea. Not only do they have fun finds but they always have great food. This time we tried some new places.

IMG_2266

Lonestar empire was our first stop – their slow cooked Texas style brisket looked too good to pass up. It was everything we hoped it would be, a little smokey, super tender…all kinds of deliciousness.

Next stop was Sunday Gravy where they had so many good things to choose from, it was hard to pick a favorite.

IMG_2268

It was between the chicken parm, the eggplant parm and the meatball – we went with the meatball and it was super tasty, smothered with red sauce and parmesan cheese on a bun that felt a little like an after thought, but very good over all.

I’m horrible, because the place that we got this from has escaped me, but this sweet corn grilled brown rice ball was delicious! I love finding new places at the flea!

What’s your favorite spot at the flea?

We went with the classic lemonade and a blueberry lemonade (with whole blueberries). The drinks are made to order and you pick him up at the window on the other side. The lemonade hit the spot, tart, and not sweet. If you want your lemonade sweetened you can choose between sugar, stevia or agave.

We took the water taxi to Brooklyn. It’s such a great idea – no hour long, hot and sweaty subway ride for us! We hopped on near the South Street Seaport area and took a leisurely cruise to Brooklyn – it was the second stop and it drops you right off at the Fairway Market. We bought the all day pass ($30) which gives you unlimited rides all day. Baked is just a short walk from the market. There were far too many good looking things to only choose one, so we sampled a little bit of everything!!

IMG_9092

Grasshopper ($3.25) has a classic brownie base and is layered with crème de menthe and topped with a minty chocolate ganache.

IMG_9091

Good Morning Sunshine ($3.25) It’s totally ok to eat this for breakfast right? I mean, there is cereal in it…

IMG_9090

PB&J Bar ($3.25) raspberry jam and peanut butter atop a crisp shortbread crust. Topped with a sweet crumble. This one was my favorite of the bars that we picked up.

IMG_9110

Peanut Butter Krispy ($3.25) Dark chocolate ganache topping and peanut butter milk chocolate center on a bed of caramelized crisped rice cereal. I liked how the rice cereal wasn’t brick hard in this bar and loved the peanut butter and chocolate combination.

IMG_9094

The Brookster ($4) is a deep dark brownie base tart filled with chocolate chunk cookie batter. 1 word. AMAZING! Have to learn how to make these at home! (Although I probably shouldn’t)

IMG_9096

Oatmeal cookie ($2.75) coconut, dried cherries, pecans & white chocolate. I loved the new twist on this cookie, I would never have expected to put cherries in mine, but now, I swap out the raisins every time! So delicious!

IMG_9107Lemon lime bar ($3.25) creamy light lemon lime custard atop a golden coconut graham crust, dusted with powdered sugar.

I had seen a friend pose in front of this sign on Instagram and thought, “I need to check that place out!” So I looked it up and tried to figure out a way to get myself over to Brooklyn from the city. I decided to get there by way of the New York Water Taxi. Such a great idea – the all day pas is $31 and boats run every 45 minutes. I picked up the boat at Pier 11 in lower Manhattan and took it two stops to Red Hook. They drop you off by Fairway Market and Steve’s is just a few short blocks away. The shop is in an industrial area but has a cute little picnic area out front with tables to enjoy your pie right on the spot!

IMG_8983

Steve’s makes everything in house, using premium ingredients. They hand form the crust and squeeze fresh key limes (they even have a special regional dairy who routinely produces sweetened and condensed milk. You really can taste the difference when the pies are made fresh – the pie was sweet and a bit tart – it was just perfect.I had the single serve 4″ pies, but they also come in 8″ and 10″. I wish I had tried a “swingle”, a key lime tart dipped in chocolate, but it was early in the morning…and I thought I should wait until at least after eating lunch before I started on dessert. They come in a few flavors, there’s the La Victoria, topped with a layer of Chipotle puree then dipped in dark chocolate, the Raspberry Blonde is topped with raspberry puree and then dipped in Belcolade white chocolate, and the Raspberry Classic, our chocolate dipped Swingle topped with raspberry puree.

From the website: “Our location IS your best bet for purchasing a pie (in terms of freshness). We’re out of our “ff season” hours, so we try and stay open on Friday till 6-ish, Saturday and Sunday, 11:00 AM until sundown. Check the link for  the setting of the sun  which best determines our closing hour during the summer. We are semi-closed on Monday and Tuesday, semi-open Tuesday thru Thursday although the hours are random. You can call and make an inquiry, or just take a drive-by and see if the roll-up gate is up. I’d say if you arrived after 11:00 AM and before 3~4:00 PM, there’s a good chance you’ll catch us with the door open. Hint; if the roll-up door is completely down, we are closed. Banging, yelling or tapping on the glass will not help. This is typical of many businesses (gate down, closed for business.)”
