A Little Bit About a Lot of Things

A lifestyle blog with a focus on my food adventures

IMG_0831

We decided to switch things up and try some place new for dinner. We brought back food from Woods Hole Market, located in Woods Hole. They are a full service market and have an extensive take out menu. Take a look at that chili! (Not summer food, but when you’re craving it, you’re craving it!)

IMG_0832

The menu has a little bit of everything from clam chowder to burritos to pizza and subs. The meatball sub was tasty, but the roll petered out about halfway through and I ended up eating it with a fork.

IMG_0828

You can’t find hard tacos at a lot of places, so we were excited that they had them here – $3.99 or two for $6.99.

IMG_0829

The burger was pretty tasty, it was 6oz of ground beef topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and mustard.

I first fell in love with Trombetta’s Farm at the Brookline Farmers’ Market on Thursdays (1:30pm – dusk, June 18th to October 29th). My friend Ziggy, of Fox Point Pickles, was selling at the market this year, so every other Thursday I would head down and visit. (Seriously, if you haven’t had the pickles yet, you HAVE to try them!!) Ok, back to ice cream. Nothing better on a hot summer day.

I go with the red raspberry chip with rainbow sprinkles. The ice cream is super creamy and delicious – no wonder the line is always long! In addition to ice cream, they made a killer raspberry lime rickey! While I enjoy them at the farmers’ market, they have a brick and mortar location in Marlboro and you can play some indoor mini gold while you’re there too!

On a day trip up to Maine for some outlet shopping, we stopped in on Frosty’s. I’ve always noticed the sign but never stopped in – so many stores, not enough time, know what I mean?

IMG_1976

Set a bit off the main street, Frosty’s is located inside a charming little house.

IMG_1973

The inside is a bit sparse.

IMG_1975

They offer coffee (hot or iced), tea, smoothies and other frozen beverages in addition to donuts. They give you the option of creating your own donut, where you get a plain donut, they add the icing, and you add the candy toppings.

IMG_1974

I stick with a classic. The donut is light as air, the cake melts in your mouth and the icing is sweet, but not overly so, a perfect addition to the plain donut! They are so fresh that you can never go back to those other guys…I won’t mention any names!

What’s your favorite type of donut?

Tucked away and nestled behind some cute shops, Cottage Street Bakery serves up some delicious baked goods.

IMG_0333

There is an adorable courtyard to sit and relax, enjoy your treats – away from the hustle and bustle of the main street.

IMG_0328

We arrive a little after lunch time, so they are out of a bunch of things, but they have plenty to choose from.

IMG_0329

A closer view of the case.IMG_0330

We ordered a cranberry almond poppy muffin. A lot of things going on here, but it was delicious, a little out of the ordinary and it hit the spot!

The dirt bomb is one of their signature items, covered in sugar and cinnamon it will satisfy your sweet tooth.

I stopped for lunch at Cemita’s at #Seaportsmorg and sat outside at one of the picnic tables. Cemita’s is just one of the restaurants serving at these cute little outdoor pods at the South Street Seaport Smorgasburg location. They make delicious barbacoa tacos – pictured above. The line was long at lunchtime, but it was worth the wait.

IMG_8990

A cemita is a common street food from Puebla, Mexico. Its 10 layers include bean spread, mayo, lettuce, onions, tomato, avocado, oaxaca cheese, chipotle, and your choice of southern fried chicken, carnitas, chicken tinga, and barbacoa. We chose the barbacoa and we were in love at first bite. While the sandwich is certainly hard to get your mouth around, it is delicious – there are so many layers of flavors, it’s hard to pick out what I like best about the sandwich. I think it’s the melding of all the flavors that does it – but if I had to say, the cheese and the avocado really make the sandwich for me.

During the summer, my friend Caroline and I would meet up at the Cottage in Chestnut Hill for lunch. Such a great spot, I love everything about it. The bright and open space, the beach decor and the delicious food.

IMG_1203

Caroline’s go to is the Stuffed Avocado tomato, lettuce, quinoa, basil citrus vinaigrette, choice tuna salad, chicken salad or 1/2 + 1/2 ($15). This salad is everything that I love – yes, I do realize that there are healthy things going on here… 😉

IMG_1202

My favorite is the Maine Lobster Cobb  bacon, boiled egg, tomato, blue cheese, avocado, lemon tarragon vinaigrette ($21). I always get feta instead of the blue cheese, just a personal preference. The amount of lobster on this salad is impressive and even though there is bacon here, it still feels light and dare I say it, healthy? While there is a decent lunch crowd here, we never have had a problem getting a table. I would however recommend reservations if you are planning on heading over there for dinner.

I finally had the chance to pop into Ogawa Coffee the other day. The Boston shop is their first international location outside of Japan and it has been receiving praises ever since their opening.

IMG_3866

The decor is simple and they have a variety of seating that will fit anyone’s needs – there are tables in the front by the windows and steps in the back.

IMG_3867

The barista, Haruna Murayama relocated to Boston from Kyoto to oversee the menu development and barista training. She is the 2010 World Latte Art champion, the first woman to hold this honor.

IMG_3862In addition to serving coffee, they offer a variety of breakfast and lunch options as well.

IMG_3863

I’m not a coffee drinker, so my husband did the taste testing. I was a little disappointed with the latte art, I was hoping for something a little more ornate. My husband reported that the latte was tasty and packed a good caffeine punch. He’ll be back!

IMG_3864

We also had a banana nut muffin which was quite tasty and fresh.

Last weekend I headed down to Faneuil Hall to check out the new Oktoberfest Burger and Beer pairing at the Hard Rock Cafe.

IMG_6269

The Boston location was established in July of 2007, in the heart of the Faneuil Hall area. The restaurant seats over 500 people and offers the “Cavern Club” as a live music and special events venue.

IMG_6250

The restaurant is covered in music memorabilia and there are music videos playing all day long.

IMG_6252

We started off our meal with the Tupelo chicken tenders. The chicken was hand breaded and lightly fried, served with a mustard and hickory bbq sauce.

IMG_6254

We had the hickory smoked pulled chicken that was smothered in hickory bbq sauce and served on a toasted brioche bun. The sandwich came with a side of seasoned fries, citrus coleslaw and baked beans.

IMG_6259

The Sam Adams OctoberFest Schnitzel burger is a lightly breaded pork schnitzel, topped with a Samuel Adams OctoberFest-infused beer cheese sauce,  smoked bacon, tangy sauerkraut, whole grain mustard and fresh arugula, served on a pretzel bun. It came with a side of seasoned fries and extra Samuel Adams OctoberFest-infused beer cheese sauce. Our server warned me that this burger was going to be difficult to eat – and she wasn’t kidding. I resorted to cutting it with a knife and eating it in pieces.

IMG_6268

Check out the inside! The pretzel bun rocked and the pork was really light! It was a nice change of pace. Hurry in to the Hard Rock Cafe to try one of these burgers, they are only around until October 31st!

Disclaimer: I was invited as a guest to sample the burger and beer pairing. My meal was provided complimentary. All opinions are my own.

I love Bee’s Knees, so when I found out they were coming to my ‘hood, I was pumped! Bee’s Knees took over the space that was formerly Joshua Tree, or for those of you who remember way back, Tonic.

IMG_4777

The space is awesome. I feel like it’s more open than the Fort Point location. The large oval bar is the focal point here, but that is the only thing reminiscent of the space’s previous life.

PicMonkey Collage

Bee’s Knees is part grocery store, part restaurant, part liquor store and part coffee house. They have all of my favorite products here – and look what we found: Fox Point Pickles!! Try them, they’re amazing. The garlic dill ones are my jam, and the spicy ones have a kick that sneaks up on you – they would be perfect in a bloody mary!

PicMonkey Collage 1

Yup, that’s a bike hanging from the ceiling. While there are tables in the front by the full length windows, I think the best seats are at the bar. They have sandwiches, baked goods, smoothies and the newest thing, nitro coffee.

PicMonkey Collage 2

(Top Row L-R) Strawberry banana smoothie with luxardo cherry, nitro coffee, berry smoothie. I had the chance to try Sam Lives, they are complete meals in a bottle. Some of you may remember Fresh Samantha – well this is the one and only Sam- and she’s all grown up with her own juice company! (They’re gluten free and vegan) I dig her packaging, the characters are adorable – and they have cute names like Jangled Mango, The Duke of Kale and Strawberry Basil the III. I highly recommend checking them out!

PicMonkey Collage 3

We went back for lunch and picked up some tasty things: (Starting top left and moving clockwise) House made strawberry filled donut, fried cheese curds, tomato and mozzarella grilled cheese, the cute signs you put on your table so they know where to bring your food, and the chicken salad sandwich.

I make it a practice to use my own photos on my blog, but I wanted to do a “spotlight” piece on my friend Anastasia and showcase some of her amazing work. I met Anastasia maybe a year ago and we see each other at some of the Good Ones events. I take photos for my blog and for fun, but Anastasia is a professional photographer. She has a way with light and she has this amazing gift of catching beautiful candid moments. I had a chance to ask her a few questions, I hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as I have! You can check out more of her work on her website: http://anastasiasierra.photoshelter.com

How long have you been a photographer?

I got into photography eight years ago and have been doing it full time for about three years.

How did you start off taking photos?

I had a few photographer friends whose work I admired but never thought I could do it myself — I tried shooting film but didn’t have a very good idea of what I wanted to shoot and the pictures were turning out terribly boring, and everything was taking forever, so I quickly got discouraged. A few years later I signed up for a language course at an adult education center (I was working in the translation industry back then), but the class didn’t fill up and I saw photography on the list and decided to try it. That prompted me to buy a digital camera, which worked much better for my levels of patience than film. I started taking my camera everywhere – dance lessons, parties, road trips, the beach, often annoying my friends, because the only thing I could see and think of were potential pictures I could make. I make a living with that now (and pay more attention to my friends).

How do you stay inspired?

I keep working! I think the important part is to start, and I have been lucky to stay naturally busy with commissioned work, so I have this responsibility to produce good work and having this responsibility inspires me. A lot of inspiration comes from the people I work with – in portraiture and fashion a lot is about collaboration, and I think it is important to create an atmosphere where everyone on the team is at their best and is enjoying the process. I try to keep the projects interesting for the people I work with, and they keep them interesting for me in return.

And of course, exposing yourself to beautiful things and experiences is always inspiring — music, books, people and places you love are part of you, and so is your work, so it’s all one thing.

You do fashion photography, what designers inspire you?

McQueen was incredible, Yves Saint Laurent. I have an appreciation for many different styles, but tend to lean towards either something edgy and dramatic, or something very simple and minimalistic. My recent happy discovery was Christophe Lemaire (thanks to the Uniqlo collaboration) – I love the simple elegance that still lets you see the person behind the outfit.

What was your favorite Good Ones event to shoot?

They are always fun to shoot – I love the color themes for the guests and the fact that there are local designers at nearly every event! I think my favorite one was the Greek Party. (Check out my recap of the Greek Party here.)

When you’re not behind the camera, what are you doing?

Most of the time, either editing or planning my next shoot!  I do try to make time for other things that I enjoy – friends, love, music, reading and travelling.

What is on your wish list to photograph (person, place etc).

I don’t really have a wish list – most people I photograph have something interesting about them, as well as places. In my opinion you don’t need to go to exotic places to find interesting subjects, although having a “fresh” eye often helps.

My name is Becca Samaan. I am 27. I have a Masters in International Development & Social Justice, and an undergraduate degree in Global Humanitarian Peace & Justice Studies. I have worked as a humanitarian for over 10 years abroad (with UNICEF in India, and at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UnitedNations (FAO) in Rome). I have worked with Burmese refugees in Thailand; with women freed from human trafficking in India; in slum schools, with lepers and gypsies. I moved back to the USA last summer when I spent a year working at the Boston Rescue Mission, a shelter in downtown Boston. This summer I started my own business where I design clothing and jewelry handmade by different non-profits and artists from around the world. Artists include women freed from human trafficking and Burmese refugees, in an effort to raise awareness of the suffering endured by those in the developing worlds, to those in the USA. The proceeds support the artists / non-profits, and an additional 10% goes to a children’s home in India. I hula hoop for fun.
