November 26, 2015 Magnolia Bakery
What trip to New York is complete without stop at Magnolia Bakery? We were staying in midtown (let’s not talk about it) and so we headed up to the Rockefeller Center location. Not quite as charming as the Bleeker Street location, but hey…let’s not get picky.
Have you checked out their instagram account lately? I dig what they are doing these days!
Of course my go to is the vanilla with buttercream frosting. Still as sweet as I remember with light and fluffy cake. One bite will put you in a diabetic coma, but hey, isn’t that part of the fun? Can’t make it there? Don’t worry, they ship. Not quite the same as walking into the store and getting a fresh one, but when you don’t live in NYC, sometimes you have to make do.
Have you had their banana pudding? Tell me about it! Curious minds want to know…

November 26, 2015 A Good Ones Thanks Giving
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Guest gathered on Sunday at Grill 23 for a Good Ones celebration featuring some notable guests in the non profit sector. The weather was cool and rainy – the kind of weather that makes you want to stay on your couch under lots of blankets. Despite the weather, there was a great turn out and I’m glad I was able to attend because I left feeling really inspired. I met Nurys early in the evening, she is outgoing, animated and passionate when she talks about her work. She has a full time job in addition to running the Chica Project, and frankly, I wonder when she has the time to sleep! But when you love something so much, it’s worth it. With the holiday season upon us, I encourage everyone to consider volunteering some of your time at a worthy organization.
Scroll down to meet some of the fabulous guests in attendance:
(L-R) Featured guests Marian Brown, Nurys Camargo, José E. Valenzuela.

Originally from the Dominican Republic, José has been a proud resident of Boston for more than 20 years. As a classroom teacher in the Boston Public Schools, he has spent the last eight years working with youth, empowering them to think critically about the world we live in today. As the founder of Boston Youth Wrestling, which works to promote youth development in inner city Boston by inspiring personal, academic, and athletic success, José has been able to expand his reach through his work in 15 schools and community centers in Boston, Chelsea, and Lynn, working with over 200 youth in the last year alone.

November 25, 2015 Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory
Located at the pier, just under the Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory is in a prime location. The day was humid and frankly hot as hell. Of course after walking around at the Brooklyn Flea we were sweating and needed something cool, so we waited in the enormous line to get an ice cream.
The line went out the door and around the building. There are a few seats inside but most people tried to catch the shade of the building at the benches outside. Don’t forget your cash kids, this place is cash only!
There are rest rooms located in the back, and if you try to get to them before you have ordered, prepare for lots of dirty looks from the people waiting in line!
While their ice cream looked delicious, we went with the old fashioned ice cream soda, vanilla ice cream with coke. Although, while waiting to pay, the guy behind me ordered strawberry ice cream and sprite, which seems like sacriledge but I’m oddly intrigued. Next time!!
How do you order your ice cream soda?

November 24, 2015 Little Cupcake Bakeshop
Little Cupcake Bakeshop was founded in 2005 in Brooklyn. They have expanded to two locations, one in Brooklyn and one in Nolita. We visited Nolita and loved the feel of the bakery (it just feels like a real bakery). They had an amazing assortment of cupcakes, it was hard not to buy one of everything! We got ours to go, but there are a bunch of tables for you to sit at and eat your sweets right away.
Rose Pistachio cupcake ($3.75) Such an interesting flavor – like the adult version of those green pistachio cupcakes. Great frosting to cake ratio.
Carrot Cake ($3.75) Delicious – carrot cake is one of my favorites.
Mini white chocolate raspberry cheesecake ($7) was really dense – and no matter who makes the cheesecake, there is never enough raspberry for me. That being said, this was an excellent after dinner dessert choice!
In addition to selling cupcakes and cheesecakes, they also have cookies, pies, ice cream, bars and breakfast items. They have gluten free and vegan items as well.

November 23, 2015 Holiday Wishlist 2015
I’ve put together a list of things that I love – some things I have, and some I’m hoping for this holiday season! Check out my ideas below and let me know what’s on your list this year!
A coworker of mine has this and I love it. This nautical rope wrap bracelet, royal’s golden fleet wrap bracelet is hand knotted in Rhode Island and comes in sizes x-small to x-large. You can get one at Newportstyle.net and it retails for $75.
Now, the only question is, do I love it in all gold or the gold and navy?
Life is a little more organized when you have a beautiful planner to keep things in order. This 2015-2016 Lilly Pulitzer Tusk in the Sun planner is available for $28 at Paper Source and features weekly and monthly calendar pages, sticker pages and a dates to remember page. I picked mine up last week and am in love with it!
For Him:
I always have a hard time with gifts for him because guys never really need/want anything. I love this Benedict weekender bag from Moore and Giles in titan milled honey. It retails at $860 and can be monogrammed for an extra $10. It has 2 interior pockets, an interior zip pocket and a 58″ adjustable padded leather shoulder strap.
If your guy is anything like mine, and he loses his keys every other minute, Tile is a great little product. For $25 a tile, you can track your lost keys from any cell phone when you log into the app. If you lose your keys, the app will send a signal to the tile to make a noise for you to easily locate it. Press the button on the tile and it will help locate your phone, even if it’s on vibrate. And a super cool feature is, if you put a tile on your bike and your bike gets stolen, you can mark it as a stolen item in the app. The program sends out a signal to all the other tiles out there and if someone else comes close to it, it sends you a signal and lets you know where the lost/stolen item is.
For the Hostess:
I love notecards, a handwritten note is just so lovely. These great cards by Felix Doolittle are amazing, they have a variety of image options, but I love the anchor. They are $75 for a set of 24 and can be customized in three different colors with your name.
The ultimate hostess gift, a Mariposa sailboat twist napkin box retails for $48. It’s made from recycled aluminum and measures 5.75″ x 5.75″.
I saw these when I was in Falmouth and I fell in love with them. They are called SeaSphere ornaments and this particular one is made with upcycled blue and green bottles with clam shell dust in Maine. I also like the lobster shell ornament, the clam shell seasphere and the mussel shell seasphere ornament. They retail for $20 and are a great gift for your or a friend. Check out their website for a look at all the different options.
For the Kids:
We love all the Jellycat stuffed animals, but Bartholomew, or as we call him, “Bart” is one of our favorites (we have 2, one medium and one large!!). Each stuffed animal comes in a variety of sizes, but the medium sized one is $22.50. You can pick up Bart on Amazon.
Great for young children, the Manhattan Toy Winkel rattle and sensory teether is a great option with lots of bright colors and easy to grab tubes for kids to chew on. It retails for $10.27 on Amazon.
I love good books, so this one only seemed fitting: Foodie Babies Wear Bibs by Michelle Sinclair Colman. It retails for $5.51 on Amazon and comes in other great titles like Urban Babies Wear Black and Artsy Babies Wear Paint.
For the Cook/Baker:
I went to the launch party for Maggie (the founder of Eat Boutique) and I just love her book – there are tons of great recipes to make and fun ideas on how to gift wrap your home made goodies. The book can be found at Amazon and retails for $13.75.
I’ve been following Dan’s blog, The Food in My Beard, for some time now – I love his recipes. He just came out with a cookbook called Stuffed. It retails on Amazon for $15.29.
Ok, I know what you’re thinking…who gives pickles for a holiday present? I totally would because my friend Ziggy make some of the best pickles around (and rumor has it, he’s working on carrots, which are MY FAVORITE). But seriously, I love the idea of a bloody mary gift basket using the spicy dill pickles as the centerpiece. You can grab them online for $9 for shipping or find him at stores all around Boston.

November 23, 2015 Sprinkles
Sprinkles is located in Brookfield Place, on the second floor, in the food court. Sprinkles was the world’s first cupcake bakery, founded in 2005 by Candace Nelson. The first store was opened in 2005 in Beverly Hills and they have expanded to 14 locations across the country. If you can’t make it to a Sprinkles store, you can buy the mix at Williams Sonoma and make them at home! The signature dots on the cupcakes tell you what flavor cupcake you’ve chosen. See the menu here. They have gluten free, sugar free and vegan options in addition to their standard and seasonal flavors.
(Clockwise starting at top left) ($3.75 each) Red Velvet: red velvet cake with cream cheese icing, Key Lime: key lime cake with key lime vanilla frosting, Cuban Coffee: Belgian light chocolate cake with coffee frosting with notes of cinnamon and cocoa, Chocolate Marshmallow: Belgian dark chocolate cake with marshmallow cream and bittersweet chocolate ganache, Carrot: walnut studded cake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting, Vanilla: vanilla cake with vanilla frosting.
My favorites were the cuban coffee (I loved the flavor), the carrot (for the cinnamon cream cheese frosting) and the classic red velvet (decadent but not overly sweet).

November 21, 2015 Siena Italian Grill
Siena is an Italian restaurant located in Mashpee Commons. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating.
Of course I ordered the bolognese. It was served with linguini and the sauce was a combination of beef and pork. The serving size for lunch was generous, but the dish was average.
We also ordered the blue crab cakes that came served with a lemon caper aioli. These were pretty tasty. Service was spotty at best even though it was past lunch hour.
Where is your go-to place in Mashpee Commons? I’m still looking for a good place to eat.

November 19, 2015 Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit
Our second stop before heading out of town is Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit. I wish we had come here for breakfast yesterday because they had delicious sounding specials – they had a breakfast sandwich with crab meat that had my mouth watering while I was waiting in line. The small shop has the specials handwritten on butcher paper on the wall – super cute. Did you know that they make the biscuits by hand?
If you’re dying for these biscuits but can’t get to Charleston, you can order them off the website, they come frozen and you just pop them in the oven!
They are sold in pairs – so we had two of the buttermilk biscuits, super tiny and light, it melted in your mouth. Add on some salty butter or jam to one of these and it is a little slice of heaven in your mouth.
While the buttermilk biscuits were delicious, the blackberry jam biscuits brought things to a whole new level. By far my favorite, these jam filled biscuits have just enough sweetness in them to satisfy that craving.
