October 30, 2018 Ellana’s Kitchen
I was excited to be introduced to Ellana’s Kitchen a little while ago. I can’t remember who picked it, but it is definitely a neighborhood gem. I met Leah, Kim and Nancy out with my kids, and late morning we basically had the whole place to ourselves. The restaurant has a handful of two tops and a larger table in the back – just perfect for us!
Located just around the corner from Centre Street, Ellana’s Kitchen offers Venezuelan and Mediterranean cuisine. Let me just say that everything on the menu looked delicious, and we tried to sample everything they had. Their most popular breakfast (breakfast is served all day!!) is the Perico breakfast ($8) that includes two eggs served perico style (sautéed onions and tomatoes), served with an arepa, quest blanco (Latin American mild tasting white cheese) and turkey bacon (bottom left). Eat in or grab it to go!
Other items on the menu include a variety of arepas. pastelito de queso (baked puff pastry with ricotta and queso blanco), tequenos, empanadas, and a falafel plate. There is something for everyone – my kids even found things they liked!
Service was excellent and friendly. Parking is located at meters out front or nearby.

October 29, 2018 Family Dinner
Sponsored Post
There are a lot of companies out there doing CSA shares or meal prep kits. I like the idea of them but I often feel boxed in with the ingredients that I would get. Family Dinner reached out to me and I was excited to try them because I liked all the options that I had seen on their website. You pick your share and have it delivered to your house on Saturdays. There is no commitment, you can pick and choose when you want them to deliver. You can choose an omnivore share, a vegetarian share, a pescatarian share or a paleo share. The ingredients are local and they even send you recipe ideas to help you with the ingredients you receive. You can get a half share (great for 1-2 people) for $59, a whole share (good for 2-4 people) for $89, or a double share (for 4-6 people) for $139. So this is what I received – as you can see, the double share is ENORMOUS! They deliver to your home in these great insulated bags and you can even track your delivery online. Not going to be home? You can have the driver leave the delivery in a cooler that you leave out.
Here’s the rundown of the goods:
Omnivore Protein – Steak, Ground Italian Sausage from Feather Brook Farms; Salmon from Red’s Best; Chevre from Valley View Farmstead Cheese; Greek Yogurt and Eggs from Brookford Farm
Fruits and Veggies – Berries, Apples, Delicata Squash, Boston Lettuce, Juliette Tomatoes and Rainbow Carrots from Busa Farms; Potatoes from Brookford Farm; Kale from Brookford Farm
Grain -Orecchiette from Law of Pasta; Baguette from Iggy’s Bread
Special Treat – Nuts from Q’s Nuts; Granola from Iggy’s Bread
So here’s my thing. Veggies. I’m gun shy about them, I don’t think I even like them all that much, and I’m at a loss most times to know what to do with them. Growing up we didn’t eat a lot of veggies (except garden salads, which I promptly passed on), so as an adult, I wasn’t very adventurous about them either. But these ones I can handle, onions, peppers, kale, squash, leeks, eggplant and corn.
I’ve been in a cooking rut, to be honest, since the baby, we have been eating out a lot because I’m just too tired to cook. This delivery really inspired me (will I go out and get these things on my own…probably not, but it was a good run while it lasted, right). So first off I made a sausage and eggplant pasta. I took the Italian sausage and browned it on the stove. I diced the eggplant and tossed it with some olive oil and then added it to the pan. I cooked up the orecchiette and tossed them all in together with some tomato sauce (it was a shortcut – if I had more time I would have done San Marzano tomatoes, basil and maybe some chicken stock). Topped it off with some of our own Parmesan cheese and dinner is served. I had a good 6 portions of this, so it was really nice to eat these as leftovers later in the week.
For breakfasts we really enjoyed eating the Maple Greek yogurt from Brookford Farm with the granola from Iggy’s. Top off with your favorite fruit, these days we are ‘on’ blueberries, and it makes a great way to start the morning.
These could have looked prettier but they certainly tasted delicious. Delicata squash on toast – 3lbs of squash, peeled and cubed. Olive oil and chili pepper flakes to taste. Heat oven to 450 degrees, toss squash, olive oil and flakes together an place on baking sheet covered in parchment paper. Cook for 15 minutes. On medium heat on stovetop, heat olive oil in pan and add 1 sliced yellow onion. Cook for 15 minutes. Add in 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1/4 cup of maple syrup. Cook for another 15 minutes. Combine squash and onions in bowl and spread over toast.
For the real recipe, check out the NY Times Jean Georges Squash on Toast. I tried this plain and then tried it with ricotta cheese (you could use mascarpone too) – both ways were delicious. I could also see adding some bacon on top for more depth of flavor.
The steak from Feather Brook Farm was delicious, we grilled with with a little Bosari for seasoning. My daughter will eat anything in sight, she hasn’t met a food she doesn’t like yet (the faster she can get it all in her mouth the better haha), but my son is a bit more….not picky, but selective. He’s one of those kids that doesn’t like his food touching his other food, otherwise, he probably won’t eat it. He isn’t really a meat eater, but did happen to enjoy a few bites of steak with some pilaf from our pantry and some broccoli (kale was a little too scary for him…and ok, me too).
I made egg ‘muffins’ with the eggs from the share along with leeks and the pepper – so simple and easy – great way to make things ahead for the week.
And I always have to have a delicious dessert, so I made baked pears. I sliced the pears in half and cut of a little sliver on the back side so the pears would sit nicely on the baking sheet. Take out the seeds with a melon baller or a spoon. I sprinkled with a little cinnamon and drizzled with some honey. Most people use walnuts but I decided to go with honey roasted almond slivers…just because. 350 degrees for 30 minutes and dessert is done! How beautiful are these?
Top with ice cream and it looks like you’ve spent all day in the kitchen making this dessert!

October 25, 2018 Hudson Creamery
After apple picking one day we decided to find something casual and quick. I hadn’t been to Hudson Creamery since I was little girl so it was nice to visit with my kiddos. The small shop offers 30 flavors of ice cream (hard ice cream only) and a variety of lunch options. They have a few tables located inside for those wanted to get out of the sun. They offer items such as hamburgers, cheeseburgers, grilled cheese, hot dogs and lobster rolls. Portions are generous in size and prices are affordable. Ice cream is available in flavors such as cotton candy, Oreo cookie, rocky road, toffee crunch, totally turtle, coffee heath bar and cookie dough.
The burgers were tasty and the ice cream was very creamy.
Service was friendly, but a little on the slow side. Parking is available in the lot out front and they accept all major credit cards. Open 7 days a week.
Hudson is really starting to explode – with Medusa Brewing Co., Rail Trail Flatbread Co., New City Microcreamery, and all the cute shops on Main Street. I remember when there was nothing but Bar Lunch on the block (there is a throwback for all you Hudson natives!). If you’re in the neighborhood – stop by and play the piano outside Avidia Bank, stop in for some delicious cheese from Katie at Mullahy’s (63 Main Street), or even visit the Farmers’ market (June – Oct) every Tuesday (4pm-7pm) at the Town Hall (78 Main Street).

October 24, 2018 WGBH Food and Wine Festival
This year Leah invited me to be her plus one at the WGBH Food and Wine Festival Brunch Bar. We spent the morning sampling some really tasty treats!
Noca Provisions brought yogurt with house made granola and fresh blueberries
Lone Star: Ancho BBQ pork tostada with chili roasted sweet potato, maple crema and cilantro
The Farmer’s Daughter brought two dishes, a sweet and savory. Milk and Cereal: pumpkin pan cotta, cereal grains, pear and cranberry compote. Spam and eggs: pork rillette, roasted pear and bernaise custard.
Island Creek Oyster Bar brought a farm egg salad tea sandwich with smoked salmon on white rye.
Field and Vine: Roasted delicate squash with hot pepper labne, granola and a herb salad.
Union Square Donuts came with maple bacon donuts.
One of my favorites was the king crab from Salt Raw Bar in Plymouth. I’m loving anything that Chef Johnny Sheehan cooks up, we first met him in 2015 at a Norwell Farms event and then followed him to Tavern on the Wharf and Liquid Art House. See our visit a few years back to Tavern on the Wharf.
Another favorite was the cheesecake from Donnell’s Bakery in JP – I tried the turtle flavor and it was delicious, I’ve been craving it ever since. Just a perfect creaminess and the crust had a little extra something in it. They deliver and do catering – is it wrong to order one just for yourself (asking for a friend 😉 )??!

October 23, 2018 What’s Cooking in the Kitchen?
Every once in a while I get inspired to cook/bake. It’s rare, but it happens – mainly on party cloudy, sixty degree days – you know, the not too hot, not too cold, not raining, days – kind of like the days I went to class in college. I’m generally a baker over a cook because let’s be honest, I have a sweet tooth. So I thought I’d just give you a look into what has been cooking in my kitchen since I’ve been off the radar lately.
It’s apple season and I love a good apple crisp. Plus, we have been apple picking so many times this season that I literally have more apples than I know what to do with. While I love apple crisp, I love it even more in these individual ramekins because you can just pull one right out of the fridge and have a single serving ready to go. Whenever I make a big batch in a pan, I always get disappointed if there isn’t enough toppings to apple ratio in my serving, so this makes sure that each one has the right amount of both! I used the recipe from Allrecipes and they always turn out perfect. I actually prefer my apple pie and apple crisp cold – anyone else out there like it that way too?
Next up, lemon blueberry cake using the recipe I found from Natasha’s Kitchen. Super light and simple to make. I wish it were just a tad more lemon-y in flavor, but all in all, a big hit in our house.
Fall calls for easy dinners and we love to make our own pizzas. The kids get into it because they love to sprinkle on the cheese and other toppings. We buy the dough from the market but you could very well pick some up from your favorite pizza shop too. Important to let the dough sit out and warm up to room temperature if it has been in the fridge, it will spread out a lot easier. We just go with cheese pizzas these days, but we make sure to add some parmesan cheese with out mozzarella to make it a little more dimensional. We add basil and oregano and bake at 450 for 10 minutes for the perfect pie! What are your favorite pizza topping combinations?
I feel like we either have no bananas or a dozen bananas at our house and we can never eat them fast enough. Just throw those almost too ripe bananas in the freezer and save them until you are ready to make banana bread. We always make two, one with nuts (for the hubby) and one without (for the kids). I used the Simply Recipes version, and it came out great!
I find that eggs are a super easy way to make a family friendly meal. My kids love them for a hot minute and in the blink of an eye they tell me they don’t like them anymore. I try to make them in different ways so that no one gets bored. My sister in law makes a delicious casserole version that is always fluffy and so tasty for Christmas Eve, I suppose I should ask her for the recipe, but know that mine won’t come out as good. There are so many ways to make them – we usually add cheese and potatoes – sometimes ham or veggies if we are feeling adventurous. These are great for parties as well – they are easy to make and you can feed a bunch of people with minimal effort!
Staying on the theme of eggs, I make these single serve eggs and my husband likes to take them in the morning as breakfast on the go. Also a great way to empty the fridge! I use 12 eggs for a 12 muffin tray – and fill it with anything I want to get rid of – some popular flavor choices in our house are bacon and cheese, broccoli with onion and cheese, and of course ham and cheese. Make sure to spray the muffin tray with nonstick spray and cook at about 350 for 20 minutes or until the eggs set.
What have you been cooking in your kitchen?

October 22, 2018 Picking Fruit at Shelburne Farm
Well, it’s been a minute since I’ve last posted – but that is because we are so busy enjoying the fall weather that I haven’t had a moment to get my photos and blog posts organized. Fall is my favorite season by far, light coats, crisp air, and of course, apple picking. We have always been a Honey Pot Hill Orchard kind of family, but we went one day earlier this season and it was just a zoo. We decided to try out a new spot, and I had heard moms at school talking about Shelburne Farm. Not only do they have apple picking, but they have so many other fun things for the kids to do that you can really make a whole day of it. While it was still busy, it didn’t feel like people were on top of each other which was a plus in my book. They are located just 20 miles west of Boston and have parking right next to the orchards.
They have a wide variety of apples to pick, from your old favorites like Macoun, McIntosh, Cortland and Mutsu to varieties that I had never head of before like Cameo, Melrose and Northern Spy. Pick a peck (10lbs) for $20 or a half bushel (20lbs) for $33. We didn’t pick pumpkins here, because we already have 6 (!!!) from Trombetta’s Farm, but they have a patch where you can pick your own for $0.60 a pound. I don’t know about your kids, but mine love hayrides! We bought a Fun Pass (weekends only) for $10, which included all the play spaces and hay rides – but you can do just the hay ride for $2. A tractor pulls you around for a scenic tour of the orchards, which lasts for about 15 minutes. So let’s get back to the Fun Pass, you get unlimited all day access to the John Deere Combine climber playground (such a hit with the kids, but watch out for those slides with the little ones, they go surprisingly fast – oops!), the mini hay maze, the moon bounce, the John Deere pedal tractors (top right), the hay climbing mountain, the pump house duck races (another huge hit with the kids) and the Tractor slide. My kids also look forward to seeing animals, and Shelburne Farm has sheep, goats, an alpaca, miniature donkeys and some bunnies.
During the week there is an abbreviated lunch menu: grilled cheese, hot dogs and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (and after visiting for our second time, let me tell you, it tasted like the BEST grilled cheese ever made!). On the weekends they offer food at the Applewood Grill which include things like hamburgers, cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, and Italian sausages. Looking for something sweet? Their bakery offers cider donuts (plain and cinnamon sugar), caramel apples, apple crisp, cookies, and cider. They have picnic tables and a covered area to offer some shade on those warmer days.
Where is your favorite place to pick apples?
Shelburne Farm

Open 7 days a week, rain or shine. Accepts Master Card, Visa and American Express.

September 18, 2018 Silver Lounge
Fall is my favorite time of year, not just because of the cooler weather, but the tourists have cleared out of Cape Cod and you can finally drive down Main Street in a decent amount of time and you can get into the restaurants without a wait. I love taking the kids to the Silver Lounge in North Falmouth because you can eat INSIDE THE CABOOSE! While they aren’t quite big enough to eat on the upper level seating (top right), they love the idea of eating inside a train. Plus, the penny candy next door at the Country Store is always a fun treat! The prices for kid’s meals are right on track (no pun intended). Hot dog, spaghetti, hamburger, chicken nuggets, peanut butter and jelly, mac and cheese of a grilled cheese – and all range from $3.55 to $6.95. Each kid’s menu item comes with an ice cream bar or Jell-o for dessert.
The Silver Lounge offers salads, seafood, steak and I am fond of their chicken parmesan. I always save room for dessert because I love the mud pie and my husband is a huge fan of the mint chocolate chip ice cream pie.
The restaurant is very family friendly and the service is good (even in the summer).

August 9, 2018 Caffe Nero Dedham
I feel like everywhere I look these days, a Caffe Nero is opening on the corner. I was recently doing some returns at Legacy Place and was looking for a quick snack. I was pleasantly surprised to find Caffe Nero right there! Super easy to run in for a croissant or a fresh pastry – or if you need something a little more substantial, they have a nice selection of sandwiches. I’m a fan of the Italian focaccia and the prosciutto and mascarpone baguette. The kids love the banana bread and the apple coffee cake.
Never been to a Caffe Nero? They are a cool chain that has some really inviting spaces. They have comfy leather chairs and private booths, and you feel like they don’t mind if you sit there all day. Service has been consistently good across all the locations I’ve been to.
Where is your go – to coffee shop?

August 8, 2018 Stone Hearth Pizza – Belmont
I love Leonard Street in Belmont – there are so many cute shops to visit. I’ve been twice in the last few months, a great place to grab a quick bite – and super easy to do with kids. Their $9 kids menu includes a 9″ cheese pizza, a 9″ pepperoni pizza, a cheeseburger, mac and cheese or plain pasta. It comes with a drink and your choice of dessert: two cookies, one brownie or a scoop of gelato. My kids, however, can finish a large pizza on their own – which I’m not sure if I should be impressed by their good appetites or horrified.
I love the sausage pepper and onion pizza, with provolone cheese and caramelized onions. Pizzas come in three sizes, 9″, 12″ or 16″. You have your choice of crust: white, whole wheat, multi grain or gluten free. Choose from their signature pizzas or create your own. I’m also a big fan of the strombolis.
The Belmont location currently only offers pick up (no delivery) but their other location in Allston offers delivery. Head over to their website, and click on the menu to get a coupon for a free cheese 12″ pizza or 10% off your order of $30 or more (takeout only).

August 7, 2018 Friendly’s Marlborough
Before baby #3 came, I was at the Starbucks drive thru three times a week, because, well….kids. Caffeine should be administered on an IV drip as far as I’m concerned. So when the new baby arrived, I feel like I took advantage of every drive thru within a 20 mile radius. Of course Starbucks on Route 9 is my #1 most frequented, but hey, sometimes when you are stuck in the car with the kids napping in the back, you just want a Fribble from Friendly’s.
Yup, 5 minutes of quiet in the car – because you know all the kids aren’t going to nap at the same time, so you bet I’m going to have a little “me” time. And get this, drive thru hours are 7am (cause you know those kids aren’t sleeping in) until 12am (because you know you’re up anyway with the baby). Happiness hour, which is one appetizer and two small sundaes, is from 2pm – 5pm and 8pm until close) and 50% off kids meals are Monday – Wednesday, 4pm until close (with an adult entree).
Friendly’s
190 Boston Post Road, Marlborough
Where is your go-to drive thru?
Other drive thru windows I’m a fan of:
Dairy Queen 323 North Main Street, Natick
Debby’s Drive Thru 442 Boston Post Road, Sudbury
Holly Cleaners 22 Union Ave, Sudbury
Starbucks 333 Worcester St, Natick
