April 9, 2014 Kings Back Bay
Kings is a member of the Lyons group, the brains behind other popular Boston hangouts like Sonsie, Game On, Harvard Gardens, Summer Shack, and Lucky’s Lounge.
We headed over last weekend on Sunday afternoon for some bowling and snacks.
Kings is 24,000 sq ft entertainment complex featuring over a dozen lanes of bowling, three bars and a full service restaurant. When you walk in the door you can see all the famous celebrities that have been here.
Autographed pins line the walls behind the counter.
You can have your next event at Kings – they have a number of packages available. There was a private party renting out the space later on and they were busy setting up for it.
Shoes can be rented for $4. When I was a kid, my grandparents used to take us kids bowling. I have great memories of being at Fairway bowling in Framingham (that has since closed and been torn down). Needless to say, that was candle pin…big ball bowling is a whole different ball game. I might be the world’s worst bowler…I think I scored in the 80’s…there may or may not have been some foul language on my part! Somehow my buddies that I went with are secretly amazing bowlers…how did I not know this?
Bowling Rates:
Before 6pm Tue-Thurs – $5.50; Fri-Mon – $6.00
After 6pm Sun-Thurs – $6.50; Fri-Sat – $7.00
*Prices are per person per game*
We ate dinner on the lane and then moved to the high top tables after two strings. I was actually really pleasantly surprised by the food at Kings. We started with the fried mac and cheese bites with marinara sauce ($7 for 6). The bites were a good, just enough cheese and breading, and they held together nicely.
The guacamole and mango salsa ($9). The guacamole was fresh and creamy and the mango salsa added just the right amount of sweetness that you craved with the salty tortilla chips.
The southwestern spring rolls ($8 for 4) came with roasted chicken, corn, black beans, peppers onions and cheese – served with a creamy avocado sauce. Lovely presentation.
For our main courses I had the single patty 4oz burger ($6.75) that came with swiss cheese, sauteed mushrooms, and crispy onion strings (hold the horseradish mayo please!). The burger was a cute little slider, but managed to fill you up. The fries were quote good as well, really nice and crispy.
Kings’ famous steak tips with mashed potatoes and green beans ($16) were cooked perfectly medium with a cool pink center. There was such a generous helping of mashed potatoes that we couldn’t finish them all.
We also tried the Bourbon BBQ burger ($6.50) that came with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and caramelized onions.
We had a great afternoon – the bowling was fun (even though I am a terrible bowler), the food was delicious, and the service was outstanding. From the minute we walked in, everyone said hello to us and had a warm smile and our waitress was checking in on us frequently, making sure that we had everything that we needed.
*Disclaimer: Kings picked up the tab for my bowling and food, but all opinions are my own.
