A Little Bit About a Lot of Things

A lifestyle blog with a focus on my food adventures

IMG_3884Located in the Back Bay, on the corner of West and Washington Street, Back Deck is a casual restaurant serving charcoal grilled favorites.

IMG_3907We went for brunch at around noon on a Saturday and the restaurant was packed. We were able to grab a seat by the window, which was great for people watching.

IMG_3906As you walk in, you see the open kitchen and the bar area.

IMG_3905The decor really does make you feel like you are on someone’s deck…

IMG_3886Our waiter was polite, shy and soft spoken (it felt like he may have been new). He made it a point to check on us multiple times during our meal.

IMG_3893There was a steady hum to the restaurant, with a mix of people watching tv at the bar, tourists and young families coming in for a bite to eat.

We started with the sausage & mashed ($9), grilled andouille, gumbo greens & mashed potatoes. The sausage was flavorful – as would be expected, grilling is definitely in their wheelhouse. The potato salad was also exceptionally delicious, I may have enjoyed it more than the actual sausage, They were creamy and nicely seasoned. The gumbo greens were a bit to salty for my liking, but complimented the dish nicely.

IMG_3895Spicy Sweet Potato & Grilled Chicken Hash ($9) two poached eggs (that we had over easy instead) & pipitas, grilled toast. This was a good dish, while the chicken was a tad over cooked, but the flavors were really nice. The dish was spicy, but not too spicy and the eggs were perfectly cooked.

IMG_3899Challah French Toast ($9) bourbon & brown sugar glazed banana or whipped strawberry cream cheese stuffed. The dish comes with three enormous slices of toast, cut into 6 pieces. I can’t imagine that people finish this dish. The bourbon and brown sugar glaze is sweet, but not overly so, and so good that we pass up the maple syrup that was brought along with the dish. The dish was tasty, but I wish the bread could have soaked a little longer in the batter before being thrown on the grill.
