December 19, 2013 Mei Mei Street Kitchen (Brick and Mortar Location)
Have you been as anxious about Mei Mei Street Kitchen’s brick and mortar location opening as I have? Or maybe it’s just too cold for you to stand outside at the food truck. Either way, stop by for a bite, you won’t be sorry.
Mei Mei took over a space in BU’s south campus that was formerly My Brothers Pizza (RIP cheesy bread sticks). A large chalkboard occupies one wall, boasting some pretty awesome artwork as well as their menu.
The opposite wall is exposed brick. The rest of the decor is simple and clean, a few tables with grey and yellow metal chairs really pop in this space.
For lunch they offer many of the options that you have seen at their food truck. Only when you get into their dinner menu do you see Mei Mei stretch their wings. Here is a sampling of their dinner menu (which changes weekly):
Head-to-Tail Spring Rolls – John Crow Farm pork, sweet & spicy dipping sauce 9
Kung Pao Chicken Dip – Copicut Farms chicken, cheese, grilled bread, peanuts 9
Carrots & Seeds – maple lapsang, ricotta, sunflower seeds, cranberries, black sesame 11
Confit Beef Tongue – green sauce, red braised & charred leeks, pickled onions, nori 12
Winter Warmth Curry – red curry, eight lucky veggies, fried rice cakes 13
Smoked Beef Shank Doufu – Mapo sauce, VT tofu, lamb head broth, chillies, apples 14
Pork Dumplings – soy broth, black garlic, fennel, tart apple jelly, almond 16
Five Spheres Chicken – Copicut Farm pastured roast chicken, tallow fried black rice,
slow-poached-then-fried eggs, carrot chips, celeriac puree, lemon balm 20/36
So for lunch, the three of us order the corn fritters, three fritters made with local cornmeal batter and Four Town Farms sweet corn. Served with Sriracha aioli and scallions. For $4 you can’t beat the price!
The Fat Schantz, a scallion pancake sandwich with housemade roast beef, potato salad, sliced apple, cranberry hoisin sauce & lettuce ($9). It was my first time trying this, and man was it out of the park!
I order the beef dumplings, three fried, hand-rolled dumplings filled with pulled soy-ginger braised beef from Adams Farm. Served with Sriracha fried rice & house pickles ($7.50)
