November 1, 2013 Max Brenner
We are familiar with Max Brenner, we went on one of our trips to NY. This is our first trip to the location in Boston, even though they opened a few years ago. We went for a late night dessert – it was a nice night so we sat out on the patio – great people watching. Note that Max Brenner does offer a full food menu consisting of burgers, pizzas, salads and waffle sandwiches. We ordered the chocolate espresso milkshake ($7.95) with vanilla ice cream, milk chocolate ganache, espresso and whipped cream. Extremely decadent.
The “Alice Cup” with “drink me” printed in bold letters on the front is inspired by Alice in Wonderland. They have these cups available in their retail store, located just in side the doorway of the restaurant (along with chocolates and other goodies).
We didn’t realize just how big the sundaes were, otherwise we would have shared one…above is the s’mores concoction: marshmallow fluff, milk chocolate mousse, graham crackers and caramelized bananas ($10.95)
We also ordered the Euphoria Peanut Butter Chocolate Fudge Sundae ($12.95), chocolate peanut butter and dulce de leche ice cream mixed with caramelized toffee bananas, chocolate chunks, and peanuts, topped with whipped cream and hazelnut, topped with milk chocolate and warm peanut butter sauce. I love peanut butter sauce, so this was a natural choice. The sundae was 50% whipped cream, we had to ask for a side dish to take some of it off. I have to say that the dessert could have been great with half of the ingredients – I thought the bananas, like in the s’mores sundae, were an odd addition. I loved the toffee crunch and the salty peanuts.
Service was slow even though we just ordered desserts and our waitress wasn’t particularly chatty – overall, our Boston experience was just average.
