February 17, 2011 Santarpio’s
When I was a kid, my parents always used to stop at Santarpio’s for pizza on the way home from the airport. Located in East Boston, they only accept cash, but if you visit their other location in Peabody, you can pay with a credit card. East Boston offers take-out, but only for pizzas. Everyone has that food that takes them back to when they were kids, for me, it’s Santarpio’s.
You walk in the take out entrance, and directly into the kitchen…weird I know…and yet kind of cool. You get to see them making your pizza. They have a huge oven and they just crank out pizzas! Santarpio’s is a neighborhood kind of place, people come in and the people who work there know them by name.
We order a pepperoni pizza. I know it doesn’t look like it’s pepperoni, but that’s because they are UNDER the cheese. Crust wise, they are on the thinner side, but not in that yuppie pizza kind of way. This is old school. Those who are napkin dabbers should find another place to eat. They have a nice sauce that tastes almost sweet, and there isn’t a whole lot to the pizza, just good ingredients.
And the sausage pizza. The sausage is wonderfully spicy at times. The bottom of the pizza has cornmeal on it so it doesn’t stick in the oven-it goes directly in.
The pizza is good-make sure to stop in for a slice next time you’re near the airport.
