I think of Stonewall Kitchen as “quintessential Maine”. From the moment you drive up the driveway, you see wonderful gardens, Adirondack chairs, outside tables with umbrellas-it’s like an oasis. While they have other stores in Maine, Portland and Camden, this is their flagship store and it also houses their cooking school. (Locations are also in Portsmouth NH, North Conway NH, Rochester NH, South Windsor CT, Avon CT, and National Harbor MD)
We came for some shopping, but after looking around, decide to have some lunch. The set up is cafeteria style, but there is nothing cafeteria about the food here. OrderĀ at the front of the line and pick it up at the end-checking out all the pastries in the middle (a great impulse buy)!
Everything here looks delicious, it’s so hard to choose, but I settle on the pulled pork sandwich. It’s pork, slowly roasted in their award winning maple chipotle grille sauce until fork tender, served on a fresh, local artisan bulkie roll topped with cheddar cheese and sliced red onions ($10) and a side of onion rings ($4). The roll is super fresh and soft, the pork just melts in your mouth! Amazing. They are really generous with the amount of meat inside this sandwich-and that’s a good thing because you just can’t get enough of it. The grille sauce is smokey with a hint of sweetness-yum!
We also get the roasted apple chicken salad-diced, grilled, spice rubbed chicken tossed with their roasted apple grille sauce, diced granny smith apples, dried cranberries, minced onions and chopped celery, greens and a slice of vine ripened tomato served on a spinach wrap ($8) and that comes with your choice of side salads in the case we choose the corn and black bean salad. Not what you think of chicken salad-or atleast not what I think of chicken salad. I was thinking mushed up shredded chicken heavy on the mayo like my mom used to make (sorry mom). This sandwich has big hunks of chicken inside-all the flavors meld together nicely. The corn salad was super fresh-the corn was sweet and had a little bit of bite to it, and the beans gave it a little kick.
Then it’s off to start shopping. We pick up a few things-I manage to restrain myself, but we do manage to leave with a jar of lemon curd (yum) and key lime curd($6.50)!!! I love lemon curd with fresh fruits and also when you mix it with Greek yogurt! And a raspberry syrup ($6.95) that I am saving for a special occasion (ie. a great chocolate cake). While you can buy Stonewall Kitchen specialty foods in your local store, sometimes it’s fun to make the trip up to Maine…just to see if you’ve missed out on anything!
