A Little Bit About a Lot of Things

A lifestyle blog with a focus on my food adventures

After visiting, and being disappointed by Cherry Bomb bakery, I was hesitant to try another cupcake place. I saw this place featured on Groupon, or buywithme.com, I can never keep them all straight. They were doing 12 cupcakes for $12. I missed out, but thought the place was worth a try anyway. Located in Milton, near the red line, the bakery is a cute spot. Free parking is always a bonus! The decor inside is a bit sparse, it doesn’t feel warm and welcoming, (I would like to see big over-sized couches or armchairs and warm lighting to warm up the industrial space) like the seating was an afterthought-but the cupcakes are why I’m here.

So each cupcake is around $2 (some are $2.50) and they are ADORABLE. I tried to go on their website, but it’s not up yet-so try to find them on Facebook for now. When I saw them, I immediately thought of Crumbs Bakery in New York. I was worried that they were going to be all looks and no taste.

The carrot. It’s exactly what a carrot cake should taste like-what a great way to start the tasting off. The cake was moist and sweet with a little bit of spicy. The cream cheese frosting was perfect-just the right amount, just the right texture, and just the right amount of creaminess-it blended so well with the cake.

The candy apple. Super fun. I expected this to be sickeningly sweet, but it wasn’t. The cake was super moist and fresh, I love the crunchy nuts that added texture to the cake. I love the whimsy take on this cupcake.

The ‘grown up cupcake’ as the woman behind the counter called it. The cupcake is a swiss cupcake, a little less sweet than a regular cupcake. Indeed. This cake wasn’t as moist and the frosting didn’t really have any flavor. For me, if I’m going to have the calories, I want to salivate after the first bite. This one fell a bit short for me. On the upside, I love the garnish-it made for a very attractive cupcake.

The vanilla cupcake with butter cream and white chocolate shavings. Loved the cake, loved the flavor. Super cute cake, but I felt like the butter cream frosting just didn’t fit. It took away from the white chocolate shavings because it overpowered their flavor. I would have liked to have seen a white chocolate frosting of sorts-this one was just too sweet and too bold.

The red velvet. I think that this cupcake is so adorable-yet I can’t figure out what red velvet and apples have to do with one another. I have to admit that I don’t really like sanding sugar on my cupcake, so I was a bit bummed out that this one was covered with it. But all in all the flavor of the cake was amazing, very moist, and the frosting to cake ratio was just right.

The s’mores. This one was sad. It looked so cute at the shop with its marshmallow topping, graham cracker sprinkles and a Hershey square on top, however, it didn’t survive the trip home and melted 🙁 The frosting by itself was super sweet, and the cake was a little dry for my liking, but when paired together, it wasn’t that bad. If the frosting were toned down a bit, and the cake was amped up, this would be an excellent cupcake.

All in all, I really liked Cakes, and plan on going back soon. I would be there more often, but it’s a hike from the city. Their cupcakes are fresh and imaginative and I can’t wait to see what they dream up next. Stop by and see for yourself!
