April 18, 2010 Kick*ss Cupcakes
I had had these cupcakes before-when they first opened in Somerville, and didn’t think they were very good. In my spirit of giving things another chance-I figured why not. Groupon had an offer that was $9 for half a dozen cupcakes in their new store. Well-if I’m going to try them again I mind as well not spend a lot of money in the process.
The new store is located in Linden Square in Wellesley. It isn’t its own store-it shares a space in the Gelato Cafe. Supposedly they are there for a limited 6 month engagement. Sunday-Thursday they are open noon until 9, Friday and Saturday noon until 10. I went on the website to check out any new flavors they may have and pick out a few I might like. Unfortunately they didn’t have all the flavors at the Wellesley location. They had all the flavors I chose for my half dozen, mojito (which I didn’t like the first time around so I was surely going to pass on it this time), German chocolate, super chocolate and the regular chocolate.
So the top row (left to right) is vanilla, ltd edition cookie dough (Chocolate chip cookie dough in a vanilla cupcake and vanilla buttercream frosting with chocolate sauce), and cinnamon chai pecan sticky (spiced up cupcake covered with gooey caramel pecan topping). On the bottom row (left to right) is vanilla, vanilla and a PB&MC (peanut butter cupcake with chocolate chips topped with milk chocolate ganache and roasted peanuts). The PB is Wednesday’s specialty cupcake and I bought it on a Thursday-so what does that mean?
Here’s the rundown:
I had three vanilla cupcakes, this one with sprinkles and the other two had m&m’s and gummy bears on top. The frosting had a strong vanilla taste to it which I liked, but the cake was bland and dry.
Here is the cookie dough-the cupcake itself was ok. The cookie dough was good but you got it all in one bite. The frosting on top was really gritty and the chocolate tasted like Hershey’s syrup.
This is the inside view of the cookie dough.
The cinnamon chai pecan sticky. Might have been my favorite of the bunch. The caramel was super sweet-instead of a glob on top I would have liked it better if it were drizzled all over the top of the cupcake. The top had that wonderful crumb topping of a coffee cake. The cupcake itself was a little dry-but I sort of feel like that can be the nature of coffee cakes.
My least favorite of the bunch. The chocolate just didn’t seem to fit with the cupcake and I would have liked more of it.
Here’s the inside view. The cupcake was sweet-the taste that comes when you combine peanut butter and sugar. The cake was very dense and it was super dry, but maybe the dry part was because it was the special cupcake from the day before??
So all in all I felt the same the second time around as the first. I thought that overall the cupcakes were dry. They looked pretty but that was about it.
