April 16, 2010 B&G Oysters
We came in for lunch on a rainy Friday afternoon. There were only a handful of other people inside, but I can justĀ imagine what dinner time is like! I loved the decor: simple, sleek, modern. They have a long bar where you can sit and have a bite or tall tables. They also have a small outdoor patio for when the weather is nice. Both of us have never been here before, which is a first. My dining companion and I used to work at the same restaurant and we both eat out a lot! We are food snobs, service snobs and wine snobs (self proclaimed).
We start off with the shrimp tempura appetizer. The shrimp are fried in a simple batter and puff up nicely. They are quickly looked over when we get to the veggies underneath. The shrimp come served on a bed of green beans and mushrooms in a red wine vinegar aioli. We were trying to figure out what the sauce was made of..it was so light and fresh. Then the waiter came over and told us that that wonderful tangy taste was from the mushrooms. The ones on top were roasted and the ones on the bottom were pickled. I’m not a big veggie fan but I gobbled these up before you could blink your eye.
My dining companion had the yellow fin tuna club sandwich and I had the B.L.T with lobster. My dining companion loved the sandwich, he said that the quality of the tuna was superb. The bread was brioche-yum! Both sandwiches came with fries (that were light, salty and delicious), coleslaw and bread and butter pickles (so good).
The BLT was good. I chose not to eat the bread. The sandwich was so large, and the bread was crusty. The lobster meat was good. After just having lobster rolls in Maine the weekend before, this lobster just didn’t seem as sweet. The bacon was good-thick slices that were salty and smokey.
The lunch was pretty pricey, $60 for one appetizer, two entrees and a soda. The service was decent- we weren’t overwhelmed. I think it was good to finally try B&G, but I think that next time I’m in the South End I will try a new place.
