A Little Bit About a Lot of Things

Jerry Remy’s had its soft opening on March 15th. The Grand Opening will be sometime in early April. I mention this because when we went there on the 25th, the waitress says to us, ‘is this your first time here?’  I laugh to myself, because I think it’s a safe bet that it’s most people’s first time here considering you opened 10 days ago.

The parking can be a pain around here since it’s only street meter parking or a public lot. I can only imagine what a zoo it’s going to be like when baseball season starts! I would describe the decor as classy sports bar, not unlike Game on. There are shiny wood floors, exposed brick, a mahogany bar that runs almost the length of the restaurant, large windows in the back that overlook the field, and of course enormous flat screen televisions (ten 60″ televisions and two 6 1/2 by 11 foot HD screens). They are rumored to be opening an outdoor patio that will have around 45 seats. Inside there are seats at the bar, high top tables, regular tables, and large banquettes. Par for the course are the buxom waitresses wearing low cut tank tops and small vests.

You know a place is gimmick-y when they offer packages to watch the Red Sox play at $500. What will $500 get you?

You can also get season tickets for the Bruins ($250), the Celtics ($250) and the Patriots ($350). Wouldn’t it just be cheaper for you to go out and buy a bigger tv?

We start with the calamari. The rings are really wide, making it difficult to pick up with a fork. It comes with ‘hot and sour sticky sauce’, but ours has two sauces…so is one sticky and one hot and sour? We are confused. Neither really taste that much, and only by sniffing the sauces can we determine which is supposed to be the spicy one. The batter is pretty heavy and has a corn taste to it. They could very well just have come frozen and thrown into a deep fryer. I thought that the chef here was supposed to be a James Beard winner…

So when you go to a sports bar, you should get sports bar things. They were having 25 cent wing night, but we opted for burgers. They have a pasta dish, but something tells me that that isn’t their forte. So for me, I chose the pastrami burger: Angus beef, provolone cheese and pastrami. It also comes with lettuce and tomato adding about 4 inches to the burger. No human being should be able to open their mouth this wide. This burger is a two-for one, a pastrami sandwich and a burger. It comes with a fried pickle and a side of fries.  I manage to eat half the burger and about 5 french fries. The meat was juicy and perfectly cooked,with  a slight pink center and the pastrami was nice and salty.

If you thought that my burger was insane, then wait till you hear what my dining companion ordered. The Remy burger: Angus beef, white cheddar, grilled onion, bacon, lettuce and tomato served on fried dough. It also came with a fried pickle and a side of fries.The burger was even taller than mine, and my dining companion conceded to eating the majority of it with a fork.

We had been hearing things about the mac and cheese at Remy’s. It comes as a side. It’s deep fried in a square shape and comes wrapped in a slice of bacon-like a gift!  The mac starts off a bit bland but then gets a little spicy in the back of your throat. If you’re looking for a heat stopper, this might be a good bet.

Overall the service was good, the waitress was always attentive to our drinks and brought us refills, who knows if that will be true during game times. The prices were reasonable and the food was decent. Take it for what it is, a sports bar.
