A Little Bit About a Lot of Things

A lifestyle blog with a focus on my food adventures

Yes, you can get this bread in the market, but sometimes, isn’t it more fun to go to the company’s store? You can sample the bread there, you can’t do that at the market…

When Pigs Fly is a company that started in 1993, and  is based out of Maine. They drive their breads down from Maine to Massachusetts every day. They have a small store in Coolidge Corner where they sample one bread a day. They also have cookies and desserts available. The Freeport, Maine store offers many more breads for sampling, so if you get a chance, head up there…and there’s outlet shopping up there too, so really how can you go wrong?

I have to admit that it took me a while to get on board with this bread. I like my bread to be like bread, and my sweets…well to be sweets. The breads at When Pigs Fly are creative. Their breads fall into two categories, classic and artisan. The artisan breads are flavors like: apple cinnamon, banana maple pecan brown sugar, chocolate, olive, and red pepper hummus with sesame seeds and garlic.

Here’s my current favorite. Cranberry orange toasted walnut.  This bread is stuffed with fruit and nuts, no skimping here. And you may think…hmm…that looks an awful lot like a (dreaded) fruit cake…and I admit, I thought that too. When in fact, it’s nothing like a fruit cake (well, that’s not ture, they both have fruit in them). The bread is sweet from the fruit, and from the honey that they add. It has a nice sugary crust on the top. You can certainly eat this plain with a cup of coffee, or throw some turkey on it and have a Thanksgiving meal in May.

They also sell a variety of cookies (that weigh a few pounds) and cakes. I love the chocolate cake but they rarely have them, so if you’re in there and you see one, snatch them up! They are called bread pudding cakes,  they are so dense and delicious, you’ll be lucky to finish it.  The one above is the ‘island cake’ which I had never had before. All I saw when I went in was the word rum, and I was like eh, I’ll try it…ends up that it tasted much like a banana bread with chocolate chips on top. Other flavors have included pumpkin and lemon blueberry.

If you can’t find their bread at your local market, you can order it online at the link below.
